Nah. Screw that! This boat is wood. It has flaws created by Mother Nature and by me.
I like it as it is!!!

To install a place for ropes on the handles.
Get a couple pieces of wood. One to fit under the handle and one to cover the top. Clamp the wood in place. Center mark. Then drill all the way thru with a 1/2" or 3/4" bit. By blocking, that will stop the wood from splintering when you drill thru.

I subscribed to this thread during the first build and caught up in the last couple of days. I have to say I'm impressed and amazed by the talent and craftsmanship on display. I am also humbled by the hospitality and mentoring associated with these builds.
I consider myself a hobbyist woodworker and have made several rudimentary objects around the house that my wife allows me to keep around. I would like to build one of these sometime in the future for me and my boys to enjoy. They are 7 year old (twins) cub scouts and love the outdoors. Unfortunately they don't share my interest in woodworking.
I have a couple of questions if you wouldn't mind. I'd like to build the 13' 6" version and was curious if you've ever made one a 3-seater? I'm not a large man, hell im not even medium
I top out at 160 and my boys together currently weigh about 100 so weight isn't an issue. Second, is there a 3rd build on the horizon? I don't know if I could swing an entire weekend so I'd have to figure that part out on my end.
I'd appreciate any feedback you have and thanks again for sharing your skills with others.

Royal, it's been a long time I read this thread. I been thinking of a third build if there is enough people that want to build. Maybe some time in April.
To answer your question on one with 3 seats and only 13'6". I would not do that due to placement of the seats and trying to paddle it. You would be hitting one of your kids in the back of the head each time you swap sides to paddle.
Years ago, I did build one that was 15' for a guy that had twins like you. It worked out with three seats and being able to paddle it.

Mr. Fishfighter,
Are plans available? I believe at one time they were, but not sure if they still are.
I don't believe i'd be able to make a build in April as I have too much going on with my boys. They are in Cub Scouts, basketball, soccer, etc. They're only 7 but they're making me feel like I'm 107

For me, the experience was as important to me as the boat. It was awesome to see a stack of flat plywood turn into boats that will be treasured for years.
If Fish does decide to do this again in the Spring, I would try to make it if it is possible. Attempting to build one from plans will not compare to going through this project with a group.
It is a lot of work and Fish is right in the middle of it. So at the end of the day, when you are whipped, he is probably feeling it more than you!
Thanks again
Frank

I have a couple sets drawn up along with bowstems. They are full size. I don't sell them, but I do take donations and what ever shipping cost is. I have someone coming tomorrow to pick up a set.

So, it looks like we have a few people that want to build.

For those that have questions, email me at pirougebuild@gmail.com . Yes, pirogue is miss spelled, but that was all I could get.

Also, those that want to build, there will be a deposit of $150 up front. Total cost is around $200 - paint. You do that at home.

Of course, read up on what tools you will need. There is a list. So, lets make this happen.
