eng08, I am not sure it was mentioned you were an inspiration to others also.

It hasn't been said in here yet, but some of us talked about it Sunday morning and Fish was still talking about eng when I went to pick up Hammer and I's boats today. Eng08, as BP said, you definitely inspired us all!

And while we're on the subject of Fish... When I got to his place today just before noon they had the tarp down already and the place was nearly back in original order. That man just won't stop...

Fish, I beg you... And I know it's just not your nature but please try to slow down a lil. We want you around for a long time to teach many more how to build pirogues!

Not if but WHEN the next class happens I will be there to help (minus me hammering any nails).

Sushi/Wick thanks for the stickers the pirogues definitely need those! I was inspired by the whole event, not to mention Eng. Every time I asked if I could help or hold something he always had it covered, and most times I was afraid I was making him mad.

I am making notes on things and will follow up with an e-mail to fish for a few measurements so I can have notes on how we did it. I think that along with a video would make it fairly do able for someone wanting to try, but having fish show you everything is no doubt the key!

For those that don't already know my drive back was adventurous also. My oldest was not feeling well and about 20 min from Fish's house he had an exorcist moment of projectile vomiting from the backseat of my 2 week old truck so forceful it hit the windshield in front of the steering wheel. This of course happened in the middle of the downpour in between towns. It took me a solid hour to clean it all out of the truck as best as possible, redress the boy, dry myself off and get back on the road. Kids- what you gonna do.

Sorry to hear this. My grandson also got sick Sunday night per my daughter. Hope they didn't pass a bug to anybody else.

Pepp I have to admit I envied your son's involvement. He is a fine young man and it is wonderful that he was so dedicated to the build. I never heard him utter a word of complaint. I never saw him wandering off to play video games or sit in the shade. Heck, I'm not sure I even saw him stop to eat drink or go the bathroom.

I second this. Hope your daughter is doing good.

This young man lives by my word of, "if there is a will, there is a way".

Everybody did a great job with little to some with great skills.

I wanted to send some scrap lumber and nails with CD to give to Da hammer to practice hammering yesterday.

Thanks BP....that means a lot coming from you, because you are a great person...and it was a pleasure to have finally met you...

Andrew is a great kid...and I am extremely proud of the way he is growing as a young man...I tear up just thinking about it...He and I do many things together and our bond is our outdoor related activities... hunting and shooting(especially shooting)...I'm sure you too will get to realize the fruits of your efforts with your boys...

Hope to see you at Fish's fall class...maybe we can do some of his duties and pass on what we learned from him, so things will be a bit easier on him...

my daughter is back to doing hand springs...like nothing ever happened...thanks for asking...Thanks for the complimen on Andrew fish...I will pass it on...

I forgot to mention in my response to BP that I passed his compliment on to Andrew and he was beaming because of it...I'm sure when I tell him you thought the same, he will get that same glow...it will mean a lot coming from the teacher of this class...

What is a good estimate on the cost of the materials?

Other than planners, Saws and hand tools, where there any specialty tools needed?
(I'm sure wood vices and clamps)

You need access to a table saw, a miter saw is very handy, skill saw, electric planner is a huge time saver as well as a belt and orbital sander. None of these tools are needed for an extended period of time, but all speed up the process...

Is there a particular reason nails were used instead of screws?

Thanks

nails were his build instruction. They are ribbed nails so they should not back out. Screws would be more expensive.

The real holding power for the boat is the glue though.

Each boat does have 8 screws though. Bras #12 2" screws.

two in each side of the main floor seam and one at the top of each bow stem through the rub rail and wall and into the bow stem.

Screws would have freed up manpower because most nailing required a hammerer and a person backing up the nail with a maul....
