I think a non dominant hand/arm can be trained well enough. I think people should just do what feels comfortable for them. I’ve been casting right and reeling right with a baitcaster since I was a kid. It’s what is most comfortable for me and hook setting and working baits are not a problem with my left hand. I actually ain’t that bad at casting lefty either, and do so on occasion when a situation calls for it.

I’m in the .1%. I go all lefty all the time and I’m right handed. I want my dominant hand handling the rod and my stupid hand (left) only reeling.

Same for me

Agreed. I was using a left side handle spinning reel last weekend and looked like a newborn trying to reel in trout. It just has never felt natural to me.

Good luck to anybody fishing the IFA tournament in Cocodrie. Let us know how it went.

Just as a heads up the Lake Charles Kayak Club is having a tournament this weekend on Big Lake if anyone is interested. Heavy north winds have flushed most of the freshwater out of the lake and it is starting to look prettier than an OT-8. If anyone is looking to buddy boat shoot me an email drunkencrawfishtd@gmail.com

I had one of the strangest days at catfish lake today

Saw plenty of nice reds, several studs, wouldn't bite anything. I threw everything in the box and at about 10:00 I had 1 redfish.

Moved around moved around still nothing.
Luckily I bought a pound of bait shrimp and finished my limit with 4 17-18 inch reds.

I've never been where I saw studs in clear pretty water and they wouldn't eat anything

Had a day like that a couple trips ago, did the same they wouldn’t hit anything, tied on a Buggs and finally got some to commit
Weird shite shite sometimes and did ya fish the actual lake or marsh around it?
I’ve only fished there in the winter but glad to hear the water looks good
Got the itch....

A pond just off the lake on the launch side.
It holds a lot of grass which keeps the water pretty
But the water in the actual lake looked pretty good too

What type of kayak do you have? I'm looking seriously into doing the financing at the backpacker on a hobie. My main priority would be steadiness when standing up. I'm wondering if the outback is stable enough or if the pro angler is worth the extra money for that.

Demo both it you’re on the fence.

I have a PA14 but have fished out of a buddy’s 2019 Outback and my PA is a lot more stable for standing. But the Outback is faster and handles a lot better. I could still stand and fish on his Outback but we were in pretty protected water on a calm day when I tried out the OB, but I know I can stand on windy days or in more open water in the PA.

Personally I prefer having the extra space and stability on my PA but can definitely see advantages on the Outback in certain situations, like fishing PAC and trying to cover long distances to fish sulphur mines

Yikes!

I have a 2016 Outback and a 2017 PA12. I'd rather pedal/paddle the Outback, but fish out of the PA.

The most I've ever covered in a day is around 9-10 for a tournament. Typical day of fishing probably between 2-5 miles, depending on where I'm at.

I just recently picked up a PA14 only fished out of it twice after being in a radar 135 for yrs
the differences are dramatic, most notably the stability
I never flipped the 135 but I can pretty damn close I can’t imagine what it would take to turn a PA over
Next would be overall space and how everything is laid out, there’s a reason it hasn’t been changed over the yrs
Of course there are trade-offs
speed versus stability/maneuverability
(But having said that it turns surprisingly well)
the overall weight the list goes on but I’m very happy with the PA
Second trip did 12 miles and damn sure figured out the mirge drive works different muscles

There's a way to getting better maneuverability in a PA now

Do your best to get your hands on an Old Town Predator PDL. The new model is $2500 and is a beast of a kayak. Most efficient pedal drive boat on the market. SUUUPER stable, fast, and good maneuverability.

I'll have to see if I can find it but there was a comparison article that compared energy expended to cruising speed of the boats. Obviously the drive itself is a huge component, but hull shape plays a big roll. Technically, based strictly on gear ratio, other drives like the Jackson FD at a 12:1 is a more "efficient" drive than the PDL drive at 10.3:1, but the hull design of the predator pdl lead to a more efficient package.
