Hi all,

I've read through a lot of this thread, and being doing research on buying a kayak (my first) for fishing ponds and small lakes around Houston.

I'm trying not to break the bank and I've narrowed it down to these three:

Lifetime Tamarak Angler 10' for $230 from Walmart
Lifetime 11' 6" Yukon for $400
Field & Stream Eagle Talon 120 Kayak for $450

Any suggestions/opinions on these, or something else in this price range would be much appreciated.

also would yall recommend going with a 12 ft over a 10ish ft if i plan doing some inshore marsh fishing?

The 3 waters kayaks are decent. Bottom to middle of the road from a build quality standpoint. Coming out of a factory in China (as are many fishing kayaks so that's not necessarily a bad thing). My main concern is their service dept should anything break. But in my 12 years of yak fishing, I've called a service dept once so maybe that's not an issue. Definitely good bang for your buck.

10' vs 12' is all about hull design. All things being equal, yes a 12' is better in most cases but there are plenty of well designed 10-11' kayaks I'd take over 12'+ boats.

At the $1k ballpark, I would be looking at the Old town topwater lineup, a Native Ultimate 12, and whatever Jackson is putting out in that ballpark.

We had a good tournament at PAC yesterday. Only 22 people showed, but there was quite a bit of fish caught. The wind and current took over mid morning, but at least the rain held off. I had a limit of Reds with one right at 26" and 2 Trout. I only weighed in 1 Trout because the other was so close to 12" that I could've been DQ'd. Lol

Btw, if you want to test out a pedal system all you have to do is go to PAC and fish the shrimp nets. Then pedal back to the launch. Especially on a South Wind.

Thats nothing. Try fishing the power lines and then getting back to the launch on a north wind and falling tide

This is the reason why I bought my Wildy
Was around mid Feb a couple yrs ago trying to cross the main channel in my Ascend
Wind blowing 20mph, tide falling
went shopping after that

And nice showing Lefty!

When my drive broke I don’t know how the hell I was able to paddle back to the launch against that current.

I just bought my first kayak this year and I'm trying to install a trolling motor on it. How do yall wire these things? I figured it would be easiest to just buy a battery box and strap the battery down on the back next to the motor but I'm worried about having too much weight on the stern. The other option I've considered is drilling a couple holes and running the wire through the hull and coming out in my center hatch and store my battery there. I'd probably put some type of power port in where my flush mounted rod holder currently is so I can unplug the motor easily without having to take all the wiring out. I want the motor to be easily removable because I dont expect to always bring it with me.

I like the light northeast winds on a rising tide. Kill em everytime in one spot in the fall

Not going to lie, given the weather forecast and my history at PAC I had zero expectations for Saturday other than to get wet at some point.

Thankfully with the exception of the wind picking up later in the day the weather held off well throughout the day, I was able to get my 3 trout(4 actually) by around 10:30am and started looking for reds. Caught my first one(~25") shortly after on a topwater then spent the rest of the day having reds just plain miss. On one bank about a 1/8 mile long I had atleast 8 fish aggressively go after it then miss completely. Swapped to a bigger topwater and on the first cast caught my second to complete my stringer but it was only about 19". Thinking I had figured it out with the bigger topwater I kept fishing the same area only to be met with another 5 or so fish completely whiff at it. Kind of frustrating to have that many fish go after it and never be able to upgrade. I was content with a full stringer and staying dry throughout the day though.

I actually hooked a Rat Red near the dorsal fin with a Topwater on Saturday.
