Pedaling is just more efficient than paddling, easier to cover more ground, easier to navigate in tougher waters, etc. You can still catch plenty fish paddling but most people who get into this and stick with it eventually look to make the swap to pedaling.
You can still get decent paddle kayaks that are setup for fishing for good prices, you'd just have an easier time and get something better quality if you'd up your budget to around $700 or so.

If you can save more and stretch your budget to $600-700, you can find a used, high-end paddle kayak that will likely come with a paddle, pfd, anchor, etc... That's what I recommend. Keep an eye out for Native

I still paddle around in a Slayer 14.5'. I'd love a peddle drive yak, but I don't mind paddling so much that I'm going to sell it to upgrade to a peddler just yet. One day I will though.
I do love my Slayer.

Good to know. I'll be going in the middle of the week in April. Hopefully I'll have the place to myself by then.

Having pedal drive is awesome but you could definitely get by without it. I would just recommend a sit-on-top if you want it for fishing and get something with a comfortable seat. Doesn't have to be a fishing specific model, but that would be a bonus since it would likely have a couple built in rod holders and gear tracks that'll make installing accessories a breeze and not require drilling into the hull.
Academy had one that looked like a decent entry level fishing kayak for around $500 last time I was there. Pelican brand I think. When you're ready for an upgrade, you can either keep it as a spare kayak for bringing a buddy fishing with you or sell and should be able to recoup most of your money.

What type of fishing do you do? I couldn't imagine fishing PAC for instance without pedals. That current would absolutely suck.

Pedals 100% change the game. Get something with pedals that you can stand up in (read: Outback)

Yeah this is important. I fish a lot of shallow rivers where pedals would only get in the way and also fish smaller bodies of landlocked water where distance is rarely an issue. Pedals would be nice sometimes but arent needed.
Now I have a buddy who lives in San Diego and fishes kelp beds off the coast which sometimes requires one way travel of up to or over 5 miles. No way could he do that without pedals. To me, if you're strictly fishing freshwater for 90% of the time, in most instances pedals are a luxury but not necessary. Now for someone who saltwater fishes a bunch, you really change your entire fishing options library with pedal drive.

Pedals with instant reverse 100% change the game.

For the foreseeable future, it'll all be freshwater. Chattahoochee River in Atlanta and a bunch of lakes and ponds in the surrounding area.
My wife and I are looking to get back to the coast full time (hopefully in the next year or so), but quite a few possible destinations still.
For Atlanta, target mostly trout, bream in the rivers, bass in the lakes and ponds.
When I'm on the coast, still all inshore stuff. Trout, reds, tripletail...
Appreciate all the advice so far guys. Just trying to learn as I go here. I have really only been fly fishing in the last few years, and infrequent at that. Had a fun trip fishing down in Florida that got me sparked back up, and wanna keep it going.

Indeed. That's where I've been looking. There was a pescador for sale with a trailer and trolling motor for 400 that looked decent (saw a good review on it via YouTube from a dude who runs a shop for yaks). Just going to keep coming for now.

Whoever downvoted this clearly hasn’t fished out of both a prop drive and mirage drive. With the exception of going into extremely shallow water, a prop drive kayak is far superior to a mirage drive. Both in efficiency and speed.
Once you have a kayak with instant reverse, you will run home and sell a mirage driven kayak. Trust me, I’ve been there

Ha. We can race next time we fish together so I can prove it to you

They aren’t there yet, but won’t be long. Jackson is working overtime to improve theirs. Instant reverse in prop drives is a nice luxury.

One poster follows me around just to down vote. The other is a fan boy that can't accept the truth.

You're on. And I have the older Mirage Drive too. It will have to be deep water since you can't go shallow. Lol

You coming to Marsh Madness? I legit want to try yours out out of curiousity. My only prop-kayak experience was with a Cruise FD and I thought it was the biggest piece of shite in the world. Seriously, I’d rather have been paddling.
