Picked up a G Loomis 9' rod this morning at an estate auction. I don't know anything about fly fishing, but it feels like carbon, and very well balanced.

It's a GL2, with a Cortland reel. Worth anything?

G Loomis is a very well respected rod company. What weight?

I'll check later tonight. I gave $8 for it, so I guess I did alright.

question...do y'all have rods that "don't like" certain lines?

I have (had) some Wulff Triangle on my Meridian and it will not cast the stuff. Line doesn't shoot on my backcast to properly load the rod and it makes a god awful squeak in the first guide when I haul. Cleaned and stretched the line, cleaned the guides, still doesn't cast and still squeaks. I'm talking maximum effort to get a 65' cast.

Take the reel off my Orvis rod that's loaded with Airflo tropical ridge and the meridian is bombing it with little to no effort and it's not squeaking anymore. Put the reel loaded with wulff on my orvis rod and I couldn't even tell the difference with that one. Not a big deal, the tropical ridge line casts fine (much better than the tropical punch) it just seemed odd to me that the line isn't meshing with the rod

Is this normal? Any hypotheses on what the hell is going on there on a mechanical level? If you read meridian reviews you'd think they would throw weed eater string into a cup at 100 feet

eta: taking them to the keys this weekend, will be doing blue water (hoping for mahi on the fly) and flats/back country. Wish me luck

I didn't want to bump the thread just for this but how did you do at Jeff Davis? My folks live in Hattiesburg and I'm always looking for a decent public lake to hit while I'm there.

skunked. Caught a little knot head bluegill on my first cast and didn't catch another one for 5 hours, fished for bass and bream. I talked to a guy out on the water that said he fishes the lake 5 days a week and had fished the full moon that previous night (think he'd been on the lake for a solid 10 hours by the time I spoke to him) and had only caught 5 fish.

The water is very clear, so that's a challenge, and there are tons and tons of willow trees in the water. It's almost like there it too much cover. There are no doubt some big bass in the lake, but the conditions were challenging and I think it would take some time to figure out what patterns are working when.

I probably won't be back, not because I got skunked..that happens...but because the boat traffic was unbearable. I was in my kayak, and at one point there were 18 boats and 2 kayaks on the 100 acre lake. That's just stupid and it's hard to really fish when it's like that. Guy I spoke with said it's like that every weekend.

I usually have good luck at Bill Waller in Columbia and I've never been when it's that crowded, that's the same distance from me so I'll probably just go there from now on and try to really figure that lake out

Same old story with every public lake in south MS. If you by chance had your sights set on turkey fork next, don't waste the gas. Same exact situation, 35 trailers at the launch on a given day and fish who have seen every bait academy sells. It's why we can't have nice things.

probably the keys. I can't wait to get to south Louisiana and get after reds and specks, but the idea of catching species I've never caught before in a tropical setting is more appealing in this hypothetical. I'll be down there all next week. It's more of a vacation than a trip specific to fishing, but weather permitting I will be out on the boat at least 3 times so I'm hoping to cross a few off my bucket list. A bonefish, permit, and mahi would be great. Not really trying to tussle with a giant tarpon on a 9 weight, but that's another species I've never caught

watching those guys throw flies in the mangroves at 30" snook makes me want to just drop everything and move down there. I've actually looked into it and the housing market is just insane in the keys. 300K for prettied up double wides

eta: a close second would be some river in Alaska when the salmon are running. Great scenery and great fly fishing, there's just something about the salt though

Im torn between flats in the keys or some secluded trout grounds in colorado or something.

The keys look SICK. I also just want to go to Cocodrie or something and go after reds.

Catching those ladyfish in orange beach has given me an erection much longer than the recommended 4 hours.

I know exactly what you mean. My first fish on the fly was a ladyfish.

I'm planning to go to grand isle in the next few weeks and bring the fly rods and the yak. If you get a wild hair come on down and join me

Polar, my son is spending his third summer in a fly fishing paradise...Henry's Fork in Idaho. He works in the fly shop. Plenty of great fishing in any direction from Island Park, ID. Trying to work out a time to go see him. They fish at least a part of every day.

Which fly shop? I just left there Saturday. I got my introduction to fly fishing there and I'm now ruined.
