Orvis sling pack here. I also wish I went larger. May go with a Sims backpack with the chest pouch in the near future.

Thanks for the info.

I am liking the Fishpond Summit @ $100, it looks like a decent size. I have no brand loyalty or anything so I am up for any suggestions.

A little gear talk:

Do any of you use sling packs, etc?

Is there a preferred method to organizing flies between boxes?

I do for wading. I had an Orvis sling pack given to me a few years ago. It dry rotted after 6 months. Probably a lemon, but who knows.

I've put some pretty heavy miles on Patagonia's sling pack. I think it's called the Atom Stealth. It has room for my DSLR, 24oz water bottle, a small fly box, and tools. I'll find a picture.

No complaints with it so far. It's not water proof, but I sprayed it with Scotch Guard and it seemed to help a bit. After several hours of wading with a DSLR and full 24oz water bottle, it's not that comfortable, but I like it.

eta: most of the pics I have of the pack are fish pics, but you can kinda see the size in proportion to me. I'm about 5'10".

eta 2: here's a better one.

If you're interested in seeing actual size with stuff in it, I can take some photos when I'm home and post them.

I have that pack and really like it. I don't have a comparison though so it might suck compared to others.

I have a waist pack that I absolutely love. I use it only for freshwater.
The brand is JW outfitters and I think they call it a chest pack but I took the neck strap off.

I use to wear vest but I found that after a long day of fishing all the weight made my back sore. When I'm not using it I turn it around to my back. The layout on it is great. Holds two waterproof fly boxes, plenty of tools, tipper, leaders, etc.

ETA: it's pretty old at this point. Probably 17yrs or more.

That would be great, no rush.

I know I want some type of pack, still undecided on the sling, chestpack/backpack combo or waist pack

I'm an avid beer drinker so I went with this one from fish pond. That fly box next to it will zip up on the back pouch, the knife goes in the front pouch, and I put my forceps in the side holster.

And loaded

I have been using a Filson waist pack as a sling pack for about 8 years. It doesn't hold a lot, but I'm kind of a minimalist and don't like to carry a ton of stuff. It has worked great. The only con for me is that it doesn't have a bottle holder and it has no water resistance. I've thought about Scotchguard, but haven't.

I'm a fan of plain old foam boxes with magnetic closure. I usually keep them organized according to species and locations. Two for Trout in the Little Red and White that cross over. Same for smallmouth and shoal bass. Then a couple that hold patterns for largemouth and sunfish species.

Ordered my first fly tying kit. Got one of the BPS kits for bass. Probably not the best quality stuff but Figured it was an expensive way to dabble in tying to see if I like it. Has a vice, other tools, materials and instructional video on several flies.

Can i use standard fluorocarbon fishing line (12# i think) in place of tippet attached to the leader.

Headed to Orange beach and all i have is some small arse 6x tippet ive been fishing ponds with, dont have time to get anything appropriately sized.

Sure you can. I have always used a perfection to perfection to connect mono to flouro. It may. It be necessary especially with slightly heavier line but I was told to do that once but a guy that owned a fly shop. He said the flouro would dig into the mini and cut it.

YouTube. So much YouTube. It's how I learned and there are unlimited videos

Also, let us know if you start looking for new materials. I have preferences for different online stores for different materials

I am a lanyard fan and also utilize the front pocket of the waders a lot. Just my personal preference.

Thanks. Pretty excited about tying some. I try to buy everything I can from little river outfitters in the smokey mountains.

Caught 3 largemouth the other day on a popping bug I bought. Was exhilarating seeing them rise and just suck the lure in. Not very big maybe 1.5 to 2 lbs, had my 5wt bent over though.

Made a stripping basket tonight. $14 of material. Got a children's bathroom stool from target (curved to conform to waist) and a bag of golf tees that I snipped the points off of. Wasn't going to pay $60 for a plastic bucket. Made a kayak mod too, upped to 4 rod holders. Mounts in the flush mount holders. Milk crate would've been easier but this will swivel back in the event I'm going under a low bridge or trees. I'll paint it eventually

Success in Orange Beach. First salt fish on fly, actually first fish besides a bream, it was exhilarating to say the least.

I caught about 5 ladyfish and a pompano. Donated 2 leaders and 4 clousers during the production.
