Line type has less to do with salt vs fresh and more to do with the way the line is fished. For example, a bonefish taper is designed to cast bonefish flies and be delicate even at 70ft. A Redfish taper is designed to load fast and deliver a wider range of flies. A redfish taper will throw a bigger fly a little better than a bonefish taper but with those heavy forward taper it is not as delicate at a distance. I've been using the Igniter line lately on my 8wt's and it's been great for redfish but it doesn't like to cast out past 50-60 feet. It would handle big bass flies very well.

I do a little bass fishing with a 400g depth charge for sinking big flies deep into heavy cover, but if I am throwing big poppers the size of a small bird I will switch over to a redfish taper.

Nice, I will look into that Igniter. Also looking at the new Hydros Bass/Warmwater line for some lake fishing this week.

Went canoeing on the Elk River near Winchester, TN yesterday. Mostly went to drink and float with some friends, but a couple of us took fly gear because they stock it with Browns and Bows and there was always a chance we would run out of beer. Morning was kind of a wash, kept trying some different nymphs and dries based on some advice from a guide that I talked to at launch that wasn't working and the river was also insanely crowded. Finally got clear of people around lunch and just put a wooly and pheasant tail on there and was getting a lot of strikes on the nymph and landed mostly some little Bows like the one below. Another guy in the group got a nice brown, but I was a bit up river and didn't get a pic. First time for me on this one, was a decent fishing river, was a very gentle float. Lots of fun to drink and have a good time though. The river is pretty much surrounded by watercress farms, so it feels very secluded as well.

I'm glad someone caught fish this weekend. We made a scouting run on the eastern side of the PAC WMA and got smoked.

Hey DG, where is that in relation to Monteagle?

Good friend just bought a place there but I'm not that familiar with that area.

Not very far at all. If you take 41A, go through Sewanee and Cowan and that takes you right into Winchester. Go through Winchester and take Lynchburg Rd to Tims Ford Dam.

We put in right below Tims Ford Dam and took out where Farris Creek Bridge Rd crosses. Was about 8 miles. They stock at the dam and at Farris Creek Bridge.

I need bass fishing advice. I have been catching a lot of bluegill in the creek by my house, but I know there are bass in there, mainly because I caught one on Saturday. I am not getting a lot of bites from the bass. I have been throwing some pretty big poppers out there, but it is so damn hot even in the morning. Do the clouser minnows prove pretty effective in the morning? Anything else I should try? Been about 102 every day here but I have still seen big bass jump out of the water.

Clousers, muddler minnows, and especially wooly buggers all day long.

I crush stripers and smallies on those too

I had a nice break this summer after I finished working and before law school starts in the fall, so I decided to do a bucketlist trip and go on a 2 week fly fishing trip out west in mid-June. My friend and I fished Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado and got to see some awesome sights along the way. Even though we were about a week early for the salmonfly hatch in Montana and about 2 weeks early for prime fishing in Colorado, we still managed to catch a good amount of fish with every one coming on dries. I learned a ton about fishing along the way and developed a serious addiction to dry fly fishing.

My friend working on his casting, Lower Madison

The hike into Beartrap Canyon

My first fish on a dry, Lower Madison

My first brown on a dry, Lower Madison

Upper Madison

Night time trout, Yampa

Yampa River bow

Sight-casted to this guy sipping in some slack water. My favorite fishing moment so far was seeing him come up and take it, Yampa

The South Platte was blown out but I'd dreamed of fishing it since I rode by it on my way to Breckenridge when I was 14

I got the Orvis Encounter 9' 5wt a couple months ago and I love it! I have been giving the perch, bass and sacs hell around lake Boeuf with a wooly booger.

Might try crawfish imitations as well. Crazy Dad is a good one. A lot of times, fishing on a sink tip line will make the difference when fishing a creek with streamers, especially crawdad patterns. Wiggle minnows are also good on a sink tip. I'd also try to hit it early in the morning as well as late at night if you're going to fish poppers. Biggest bass I caught all year on a fly rod was on a bream killer dropped below a large deer hair popper. Don't discount small flies.

Do you guys use tippet for bass fishing? I have found that I get tangled much more when I do.

Yes, but's it's usually heavier tippet material. 0x, 1x, etc.

ETA: I mostly use flouro tippet. Light flouro has a tendency to cut through mono. I always use a perfection loop to perfection loop.

What does everyone else use?
