The fury is a hell of a boat. Once you get up in to that price range they are all pretty good. The only one I haven't liked is the Strike. Draft sucked and it poled like a barge.

Might as well go down to Orlando and wet test. It would be hard for me to give up the lower free board of the fury, especially with our winter weather. Of course this comes from a guy who's taken a 25hp tiller skiff to the barrier islands....

We're going down there in the fall. I was on the fence about that because I've fished in enough Furies, but none of my friends have EVOs yet so I'm gonna need to go demo it.

In my dumber days we've made runs out there in bateaus. But it would be cool to have a boat that could comfortably make all those runs without any concern.

I really want to compare the front deck space on the EVO and the Fury in person.

Tough on that budget.

I'd take a look at the Clearwater, or go check out Cabelas.

Not necessarily restricted to that. Didn't realize they were so expensive. What's the average price for a middle of the road flyfishing setup?

You could get something really good that would last you a long time for $400-$500.

TFO BVK 8wt and an Orvis Hydros large arbor would be a good setup. For reels in that price range, you could also look at TFO reels, the Sage 2200, or the Allen Kraken. All good reels.

eta: don't get me wrong, that Clearwater setup will suit you fine. But, if you get into it, you'll probably find yourself wanting to upgrade pretty soon. With the options mentioned above, you won't need to upgrade for awhile...even though you'll probably want to anyway ha.

LL bean combos are pretty good but the reel might not be sea worthy. It would require more maintenance and cleaning.

Clearwater is a very good beginner setup for the money. Great value. My brother in law uses a Cabela's rod and does really well with it.

I have a question for y'all regarding de-barbing hooks. My BIL said that he debarbs virtually all of his fly hooks. Says that it does more harm than good (i.e. tearing up a fish's mouth, tough to get unhooked out of clothing or trees or rocks). He said a lot of people do this practice. Any of y'all debarb all of your hooks?

Haha negative. I don't think I'm sporty enough for such things.

We hungry.

It sounded awfully tempting after I spent about 10 minutes trying to get a damn hook out of my shirt (I did not have forceps at this time).

I don't do it at all and I rarely keep fish. I just find it uncommon to tear a fishes mouth up with the barb. That's the thing with catching fish (trout and smallies at least b/c that's all I know) on a fly - they don't swallow it and it is rarely in a location that I can't unhook quickly with my hemostats. Many times the fish never even comes out of the water and I spend maybe 5 seconds fiddling with the hook

On the rare case where its really tough to get out I just cut the fly off. No big deal for most of my flies since I tie them myself and usually have at least 3-4 backups.

I smash all my barbs, and occasionally my friends barbs when they aren't looking.

Just made a trip to orvis and picked up a fly box, headlamp, Tervis tumbler (GOAT cups), and a couple of books. I needed a bigger fly box and a headlamp and just picked up the other BS on impulse. I was also looking for a good travel carry-on case, but they don't have the simple one in store any more, just a big one that you would likely have to bag check and costs 150 bucks

Anyone getting out there today? I might do a little bluegill fishing in Highland Park today. No I do not live there, but they have a small park with a creek that allows fishing (with a permit). Tried to call them and ask them permission, but got no answer. I am just going to walk over there and try not to get noticed.

Anybody have a recommendation for a sinking tip fly line? would prefer something that both my 6 and my 8 can handle (this 6 throws a 7wt line very well).

Rio's outbound series is good. I don't know what kind of fish you're after, and you might want something faster, but the outbound intermediates are good lines.

I have tropical outbound short intermediate that I sometimes use on my 8, and I just ordered some for my 10 for a Nicaragua trip in a couple weeks.

Finally found the spectra I needed. Hopefully gonna get some shots at roosters in a couple weeks in Nica.
