I use Cortland 444 laserline with sinking tip. The floating portion is easy to see and helps me detect strikes. A 7 weight should work on both your rods. What are you fishing for?

Mostly trout and smallmouth on the 6. May occasionally use it for largemouth on my 8.

Guys, I am in the market for an 8wt rod for big freshwater and saltwater fishing. What are some recommendations you can give me? Have been looking at the TFO Axiom. Thanks for your input.

I'm not sure about the 8, but a dealer told me TFO discontinued the Axiom 10 a couple weeks ago.
What do you mainly want the 8wt for? Reds?

Yes, and I am going to a ranch with some huge bass next month and I don't think my 5 will be ideal for that. It will mainly be a saltwater and big bass rod.

Got my eye on that one as well. Have any experience with it?

My 8 wt is a Winston that I got a great deal on. Check mrfc link I posted a page or two ago and look in their clearance section. They often have great deals.
I know several in here have 8 wt BVK. I have one in 5 wt and really enjoy it

I have 3 tfo rods. None are the BVK, but they all cast well.

I like my 8 weight BVK a lot. I've heard Axiom 8 weights are nice but I've never thrown one.

I've got the BVK in 8wt. Great rod, easy to cast. My only complaint is its not the best close in.

You think so? I think the BVK is great for short shots.
I just got an Axiom 10. It's a totally different rod than the BVK. The Axiom is very stiff, and will let you put a lot of pressure on fish if you want to. It's also got a lot more lifting power than the BVK. It's a much better rod for big fish or deeper water.
The BVK is significantly lighter and it loads much better for short shots with lighter lines. The downside of the BVK is that it doesn't have the backbone that the Axiom has, and it doesn't give you as much power on the longer shots as the Axiom does. If you were to pick one of the two for a variety of situations, including reds and bass, then I would go with the BVK. They're both great rods though, and it really just comes down to whether you want the stiffer, heavier Axiom, or the lighter, faster BVK.
If you go with the Axiom and you're going to put a WFF line on it, I might up-line it with a 9wt, because the 8wt Axiom is really more of a 9wt than an 8.

First fish on fly a few weeks ago. It's definitely a different feel but I can see why people enjoy it

It was kinda an accident but ill take it!
A few minutes later I hooked onto something that felt alot better but it broke off... I think the tippet was frayed from oysters

Bro I pulled the trigger are an Allen alpha 3 and axiom 8 wt. I'm copying you. Any line recommendations that work well with this setup? Warm water fishing.

Badass man
As for line, I got the Saltwater series Scientific Angler Mastery Redfish WFF Line. I have no idea if this is a good line or not as I'm pretty unexperienced when it comes to fly fishing but it has worked well for me so far. Maybe some of the other guys can chime in on a good line to use.
Also, take a look at what Bluemoons said a couple posts up about overlining the Axiom. After having used 8wt line on it I do agree with him and the next time I respool I will be using 9wt line.

Sweet dude! Badass setup.
There are a ton of good lines and really you can kinda pick the short shooting lines based on color.
The SA redfish taper Reds mentioned is great. My pops has that on an 8 and it shoots really well. Rio has a great redfish taper too. I have Wulff Bermuda Triangle taper on my 8. It's a good line too.
You don't have to get a redfish/bonefish taper if you don't want, but I like them because they're easy to haul and they load really fast.

Can those bonefish lines be used in freshwater as well or should I change out when lake fishing?
