Get yourself a tripod and a wireless shutter release. Sit back and snap away. If you want to freeze their wings, you'll need a nikon speedlight.

Found one of my feeders on the ground this morning. A cat ran off when I went out there. I think it jumped up to get a bird and knocked it down.

I started with a couple of gray/black/white ones in early August. Had 6 or seven of the ruby throated ones for a week or so, but they seem to have moved on. Back down to just the original two.

I've got 2 feeders out about 50' apart and each 1 has 1 greedy little bastard that runs all the other ones off.

Should I add more feeders or try to kill the mean ones so the others can get a drink?

Finally found my feeders. Had 4 on one and 3 fighting over the other one this evening.

Just put your two feeders closer togethter, about 8-10 feet.

We have three feeders out and 8-10 swarming them. It's really cool to sit and watch the whole group dynamic unfold.

I'll try that. I read on the internet that if I spaced them farther apart, the alpha hummingbird would give up on protecting 2 feeders. The problem I've created is now I have 2 alphas.

They are all assholes. Just overwhelm them with feeders first, then the numbers take care of the overwhelming.

The key is to put them close together enough that one hummingbird will try to guard them, but far enough apart that he won't succeed.

Here's about 10 seconds of two of the 5 feeders on my deck on Monday evening.

Good stuff.
My son has taken over and has gotten involved and is now naming the birds (he's 7).
We have about 15 birds at any one time between 2 feeders. He spends time every day before and after school on a ladder about 1 foot from one of the feeders, he's been doing this for weeks and has them trained to land on his fingers while they feed.
I have video and pics, but have yet to load. He's claimed recently that he has been able to pet one of them on the head while she feeds, I'm yet to observe it.

We go through about 2-3 cups of sugar water daily right now.

He's going to be very sad when they leave.

We've had at least 25 birds for the last month or more. 5 large feeders and use 5 lbs of sugar a week. I'm ready for them to leave really. Hard to watch Tv on the deck when they are out there buzzing around.

I thought mine were starting to leave. Record number this morning. Sugar run later this morning, as I am smooth out.

I saw one out my back window on monday so I went and hung a feeder. It took about 2 hours for the bird to find it, but it has been there almost non stop since then.

A couple others have showed up but the first one stays perched on a limb above the feeder and runs off any other birds that show up.

We had at least 15 yesterday evening. They emptied all three of my feeders in record time.

My biggest decline just happened. Had easily a dozen yesterday evening hammering the feeders in peace. I just went home for lunch and there was 1 bird perched on the hook with no competition at all.
