The case for green-scoring antlers

Got my Ga bow kill back this past weekend. McKenzie 6900 wall pedestal. Big fan if you have the right spot for it.
Anyway I can kick myself in the arse. Never green-scored him and didn’t make it down to score him after 60-day drying period. Shame on me.
After 6 months of drying we scored him at 139 2/8ths” (gross). My best to date but it would really have been even sweeter to see that tape make it over the 140” mark, which I’m sure he would easily made green and maybe after the 60-day mandatory drying period, which I personally think is a crock of steaming chit.
Measuring after a buck is down is the correct way it should be done IMHO. He’s walking around with every inch of rack fighting, rubbing and breeding, so why should we hunters penalize ourselves and the animal with some horseshite drying period. He is what he is when he hits the ground, not two months later.
That said I’m proud as hell of him and think my new taxidermist did a bang-up job on him.
Welcome to your new permanant home “Ghost”. ;)

Muchos gracias
In tribute here is a live action game cam pic of him @4hrs before I thumped him about 200 yds or so away from the pic.
The little lady in the scrape is the one who led him past my climber to his fate.

nice buck!
stop kicking yourself about a number, you were happy enough with the animal on the hoof to shoot it without knowing the score, be happy with the buck on your wall and enjoy telling the story of the day he entered your life permanently...

Is the time on the camera correct? If so, this just illustrates why I try to stay in the stand as many hours of the day as I can.
Beautiful deer, BTW!

+1 for scoring them what they were when they were alive not what they were when they were dead and dried out. Seems like the best way to honor them.

I have never understood this.
Anyway, nice deer

That's a beautiful deer! Nice mount.
I've got a pretty good non typical hanging in my office. Scored something like 196 5/8.
Guy looks at me and says, just think if you'd have scored him right at 60 days he might have bumped 200".
I shrugged, I killed him over 2 years before I had him scored.
I asked, what difference does it make? I'm happy with him, that's all that matters.

That’s a fine one.
Score isn’t everything. I’ve seen several cases where I preferred the lower scoring deer.

Yep, to the minute.
Luckily I walked out the other exit point from a funnel I was hunting about 350 yds away about the time this pic was taken
I walked down to my afternoon spot down the field edge on the left side of the pic. I smelled him strong as could be at the end of this field just before slipping into the bottom straight over him in the pic. I think they were bedded in the thick stuff in the field in the pic and luckily didn’t see, hear or smell me as I slipped past them that afternoon on my way in

What is the other one on the wall?

Fine deer, who cares about the score, you’re proud of him.I agree with you about the green score vs.60 day waiting period.I don’t like the idea of deductions either.I saw B&C buck at taxidermist that was nice symmetrical 10 pt with hardly no deductions, nice deer but he had couple with greater mass and more points that I would’ve rather had on my wall even they didn’t make B&C.because of deductions.
Btw-your deer is bigger than any I have mounted but not as big as the one my wife has hanging.

Great buck and while score is fun don't get too wrapped up in it. I deliberately let a higher scoring buck walk by so that I could shoot the one behind him. I knew the second wouldn't score as well but it was the one I wanted. Just curious, how wide was he. My first big deer has a rack that looks very similar.

This is the attitude. I would add: "did he eat well" to my scoring criteria.

Nice deer and cool mount.
x 2 on all the comments about be proud of what you have and the score is just a number.
I score all of my deer for management purposes but my favorites aren't necessarily the highest scoring.
The stories that go with and the experiences mean way more to me than some number.
