Teaching a pointer to point

Can anyone recommend a book, you tube channel or something to help me learn how to teach my GWP to point?

How old is the dog? Has it ever shown any inclination to point any object before?
If I had a dog that liked game but was more inclined to flush birds than point (not sure if this is your situation), I'd gear up with homing pigeons and follow the process detailed in The Perfect Start DVD series by Jon Hann at Perfection Kennels

Get the DVD Gun Dog. Excellent. It might be out of production but people still sell used copies. If you’re in BR area, you can even borrow mine.
But to be honest, my GSP just did it naturally. Got a bird wing and put it in end of fishing pole when he was young. Would lock up on it

That’s like training a lab to chew shite up.
They just do I?t.

If it isn't pointing on its own you've got a long row to hoe. Most pointer puppies will point out of instinct at 8 weeks old. Training a bird dog has more to do with commands like "Whoa!", "birds in here" and "ease up... ease up" than physical pointing.
Just my 2 cents...

Tie a wing to a fishing rod with about 3ft of string.

Our GSP hasn’t hunted a day in her life and she points at birds, squirrels, lizards, the other dog LOL.

Like a really good friend and long time trainer told me.
What do you know more about birds and pointing than a pointing dog

If your pointer doesn't point then you need to honestly just get a new dog, that's like teaching a retriever to retrieve you just can't really do it. It's natural.

Guess I wasn't very clear. He's 2 and he does point. I want to learn to teach him (and myself) to hunt. I would love to teach him and take him on a trip like wickowick posted about. So I guess I'm looking for someone to point me in the right direction for that.

You can teach him “whoa” and to hold a steady point when approaching a bird. You’d be surprised how natural pointing comes to a true pointer when you actually get them on still birds.

My Weimaraner does that too. Points at squirrels like crazy. Locks up and doesn’t move a muscle for what feels like minutes until I say something. More of a biscuit hunter than anything though lol

A few guys on here can really steer you in the right direction. I haven’t done any wild game hunts with mine yet but I’ve done some training with pen raised birds and it’s so cool to see a point dogs natural abilities come out even if it’s a completely new scenario for them.
Here’s my Drahthaar during a training session earlier this year.

My wife has a year old toy poodle that will point at doves on the fence.

You just get them in the woods with birds and they figure it out.

My GSP has pointed at everything since the day I picked him up.
Now whether he would have the patience to hold point until a hunter got there before he flushed a bird is another thing.
All squirrels and birds are taking their lives in their own hands when they come in my back yard. He quickly points at them and then attacks.

I recommend the same as Tulane...buy a book called Gun Dog by Wolters. A lot of folks here will say the techniques are outdated, but I believe in doing what has proven to work. This is an old series of books and as a result, you should be able to get a copy for $10 - $15 on amazon. I have used his retriever training book called Water Dog and it worked very well.

North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA), look up your local chapter and go to one of their training days. You will learn a ton.
