I had to look up to make sure this wasn't an onion article. I genuinely can not believe our country right now.

Teachers given bats to fend off school shooters

quote:

Last month a Pennsylvania school superintendent announced his plan to equip classrooms with five-gallon buckets of river stones to use in the event of a school shooter situation, a strategy that was dismissed by many safety experts.

Now Pennsylvania’s Erie Times-News reports that a second state superintendent has armed teachers with 16-inch wooden baseball bats in a gesture he calls “symbolic” — but also potentially practical in times of emergency.

quote:

“It’s not about just hiding and waiting,” he added. “There are options, and one of those is to fight.”

My wife has a knife. And instructions from me to shove her wooden desk in front of her 2inch thick door and get her kids out the window and across the street behind a brick home.

I don't give a Damn what policy is. That's the safest thing for her to do.

It would still be the safest even if she was armed.

Definitely best to haul arse. A number of national studies by the FBI, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Secret Service have concluded in the majority of the incidents the elapsed time to be no more than fifteen minutes, many of these have lasted seven minutes or less.

Not much time for law enforcemet responders to get there.

Let's hope we don't follow in the UK's footsteps and call legislators to pass bat control. Gotta have a baseball permit for a bat!

But seriously, the logic is confusing to me. So you're telling me these teachers would be willing to bludgeon a kid to death with a bat but aren't comfortable using a firearm?

Isn't that a silly idea....bring a miniature wooden baseball bat to a gunfight. When I saw the story on tv, the first thing that came to my mind was this scene from "The Untouchables." "Isn't that just like a Wop? Brings a knife to a gunfight."

This reminds me of a comedian I heard after 9/11. “Screw TSA, just give every plane passenger a mini bat as they get on the plane and collect them as they get off. Someone gets out of hand or try’s to hijack the plane? 150 people swinging bats around in an enclosed space is going to end that real fast.”

It's ridiculous. By giving them a weapon they admit they need a tool to fight back against school shooters. But instead of giving them the best tool they can to defend the kids they give them a bat. Not even a real bat, but a mini bat.

Do you have a better proposal? I’m not saying it’s ideal, but armed is better than unarmed.

Fighting is better than waiting to be executed.

I wouldn’t want a teacher armed with a bat going looking for the shooter, but if my kids are hiding in a classroom, i would rather the teacher there with them to have a fight-back mindset and some sort of weapon if the shooter tried to get in their classroom.

I called the police about a parking lot accident the other day at work, and i kid you not that the first officer was knocking on the door before i hung up with the 911 operator.

There are a lot of things that can be done to help protect schools and teachers. I'm all for giving teachers the capability to protect themselves and their students, but "arming"' them w/ a miniature bat to be used against guns doesn't qualify as protection. Even the school superintendent in the OP admitted, “The bats are more symbolic than anything."

A few things that come to mind: Develop a policy so that a teacher can be armed (concealed or in a secure spot in their classroom). This would be a voluntary program. The teacher would have to successfully complete a professional training program endorsed by the school district. The list of teachers approved to be armed would be known only to the principal (wbo would be responsible for implementing the policy) so that a "bad guy" would not know which teachers to target. All schools should have active shooter drills (we have drills for everything else). The drills would include more than just hiding in the classroom. Classrooms and schools should be upgraded w/ improved security measures and infrastructure. All schools should have at least one amred security/resource officer onsite who's willing to enter a fight.

Here are some interesting articles on the this topic.

Completely agree with tiger.

Rather than wildly slinging around a small bat I’d rather the teacher precisely deliver a small chunk of metal to the vitals.

And also completely agree with him that it should be voluntary.

No kidding. I take it they have never seen Casino. That scene still makes me shiver.
