Please! Rigs, hooks, etc. fish bites?

I know how to fish in general but not Pompano.

Pompano rig (weight on the bottom with a loop 12-16” above and a hook)

Number of bait you can use

Where to cast? Into breakers and wash? Time of day matter? What size and type hook?

There's a lot of "how to" articles. Pensacolafishingforum.com is a good website to learn about it as well. You likely need to go down the beach east or west to get to a suitable fishing area out of the crowds.

Bait
1. Sandfleas (get a rake to catch them)
2. Shrimp Pieces
3. Fish Bites (artificial scented strips)

Definitely buy the pre-made rigs. Should be available at Half Hitch tackle.

You can also catch sand fleas with a half of a wire minnow trap. Little easier to carry as well.

Please follow up with results. Been trying the above proven methods in Destin without success for years.
Good luck!

Look for dark spots of water between the sand bars. Pompano hang out in the “deep” pools between the sand bars. I use Fishbites for bait. Buy the bait locally to get fresh Fishbites. If you buy from Amazon or Walmart, it’s not fresh. Shrimp or coquina flavor is what I use.

They also have a sand flea flavor…I use the green/yellow shrimp and the sand flea that’s a pink and white color . Get the pre made double rigs. Put fish bites on and tip with fresh dead shrimp if you can. Might have to cast in different areas to see where they are. I usually start right beyond where the waves are braking. That stirs up the sand exposing a lot of bait for them. If the first sand bar is close cast on the back side of it. Also try to find cuts in the sandbar to fish if you are able too.

Are you guys using surf rods or something more like you’d use for reds/trout?

Surf rods over 9' really helps to launch bait to where it needs to be. Your traditional 7' and under trout/red rods lack the casting distance you typically need. I found a cheap ugly stick 10' surf rod at academy for $65 2 years ago.

I’d bring both fish bites and fresh shrimp. Locals always told me to peel the shells off before placing on hook. Did well that way. Sometimes they only want fish bites. Other times shrimp. You can also catch sand fleas. You don’t need one of those trough rakes. I’ve seen people catch them with small bait nets dragging in the sand at the waters edge. The mesh allows the sand to escape. Fleas are easy to catch early in the morning. Tough as the sun comes up. Good luck

Most importantly you have to have a relatively calm day to be successful. We just got back from Destin for a week and there was only 1 day calm enough to surf fish.
Red flag most days.

Yellow flags today. I was fishing the ditch between shore and sandbar. Double rig, i tried orange bite on one hook and sandflea flavor on the other. Had three solid hits but no hook set. The orange is all tore up, the flea flavor doesn't look touched. Downsizing hook tomorrow to a #8 j hook and might trim the bait thinner.
