03' and up 4.0 Auto TJ. Get an LJ(long wheelbase TJ) if you can. Their value holds more than a regular TJ.

Make sure there is a d44 in the rear

The new JK's are better offroad, but are more complicated as far as electronics etc...

YJ's with 4.0's are decent, but old. YJ's are kind of like the bastard child now. not a CJ and not a TJ. They have leaf springs, so lifting is much cheaper than TJ.

CJ's are great, but be prepared for old/classic car issues and cost. And engine issues

to add to that point, i know for the 2014 or maybe 2015 and newer that is a good thing in terms of engine performance. i don't know the negatives to it except that you could take an old jeep out and leave the top off 100% and it isn't ever going to ruin your dash electronics. jk models can still remove doors, and flop down front wind shield etc.

Talk me out of wanting to buy a jeep

They are impractical, ride terrible, a/c's are limited, bad on gas, expensive to buy, systems are glitchy, slow, don't hold much (people or cargo), can't really tow, hot in summer, cold in winter, fit and finish suck, something always rattles or squeaks, death wobble.

Do you worry about rain everyday you drive to work?

Now, do you want to worry about rain everyday you drive to work?

I want you to buy one though so I won't be alone in this hell.

I guess I have oversold them. I SHOULD have said something like fightin tigers... there is a baggage that comes along with wranglers. You need to be willing to see that baggage ahead of time. Jeeps are like a calling. If you hear the call in your heart, you will forever feel wanting if you do not answer... but it does come with a few negatives.

Now... I will say, my stock rubicon drives -way- better than my xterra does. So, I think all of the "on road" performance hate is pushed too hard. Far as stock jks, they're actually pretty good on the road imo. And the AC in my jeep blows out air so hard it will push my phone over when i'm using it.

mine does not leak. Soft top takes 5 minutes to put up if it rains. Hard top I put on in the winter during hunting season. Rides straight and ok, its a jeep not a cadilac. It has turne dinto my daily driver since my son started to drive.

I love it, the kids love it. However, I will be selling it soon to move back into a truck.

For an extra vehicle though, that baggage is negligible.

FWIW, there is a big difference in the ride and comforts of a JK and all the others, even to a TJ/LJ

I gotta see that. I have NEVER had a spare key in any of my Jeeps.

The poster 4WHLN helped me remove a door, hinges and all, one day when I looked my keys inside.

Oh yeah, Jeeps rust more than any other modern vehicle I have seen

You obviously don't know Land cruisers. The Japs stole jeep's tech and made them twice as strong and way better built. Chrysler vs Toyota is laughable. I grew up with jeeps and Land cruisers. You can mod a jeep to hang with a cruiser, but you can off-road the hell out of a land cruiser straight out of the box.

Agreed. I've got an 83 CJ-7. And 3 sons. Already got the wife on board with getting 2 more CJs so each son will have his own.

And working on a jeep is part of the agreement you make when you purchase one. Just because it wasn't in the contract doesn't mean it's not part of the deal.

OFF road, out of the box and fresh off the lot, there's really nothing that's going to go toe to toe with a Jeep. Aftermarket is aftermarket. You spend a ton, you can make your Jeep or anything else super capable.

Hi, the toyota 4runner, tacoma, lexus gx460, nissan xterra, nissan frontier would all like to say hello.

If we are talking stock for stock and older: all of the vehicles listed, all suzuki 4x4s, the international scout, older broncos, older pathfinders...and so on.

When a stock rubicon stopped being able to run the rubicon, it became irrelevant to me.

Signed,

The guy rocking a 4runner, xterra, and 4.0 rubicon.
