Yes, both Toyota engines have always been dogs.
Nissan & Datsun, have always won on this spec.
GM, has always beat them both when they had the 4.3 V6. Truck chassis never held up to the abuse of off-roading.

Reliability, Toyota and Nissan small trucks have always beat GM. Most trucks you see overseas are Nissan’s and Toyota’s.

When I was big in an off-road club in California most the guys ran Nissan’s and Toyota’s. 60% Nissan to 40% Toyota. It was due to price as both trucks were well built trucks.

Example

Someone stole my 1993 Nissan Frontier 4x4 3 weeks before Xmas in 1995. I went looking for a new or nice used one back then.

I bought a new truck week after Xmas in 1995. Nissan had a 4 in California 1995’s all loaded $19k reg $22k. I had to wait 3 days to get it in, and it was loaded leather, roll bar, winch, Nismo back then really Nissan Factory components for the lift.

Same dealer sold Toyota’s and I had to buy a 1996. Similar package and had to wait a month to come in $24k.
Less stuff on the truck.

They actually gave me a used Toyota 4x4 to drive until my truck came in. It was slower than the Nissan. It also got better gas mileage. It was also a nice truck.

Nissan, was my go to for the lower price and good reliability out of them.

Not even close to normal. People are paying 70k for mid tier new full size trucks.

This is the new normal.

ETA, oops gotta start checking the dates and page count on these threads…

I'd go with a Tacoma. Coloradoes can fall apart. I've seen what my brother in law did to his mother's. They aren't very durable.

Hate to tell you this but this is called inflation. If you haven’t noticed it, I don’t know what to tell you.

Not only that, but prices will not be coming down. Do you know what scares the FOMC more than inflation?

Deflation.

Personally I would not buy anything from General Motors.

My son is driving a 2018 Tacoma. It has 55k on it and no problems so far. He loves his truck. He chose it over a F-150.

The ride of the new Colorado is nice.
They always beat the imports on ride.

Reliability, goes to the import trucks.

Import trucks have improved their ride.

If your choice is a short term, keeping only 4-5 years I actually consider the Colorado given you can get a 2023 or latest model with much more updated cabin and technology. If long term the toyota is the way to go. With the new model coming out in 2024 if you can wait you can get a low optioned one if you can find one versus the older models. The only issue with the old tacomas is the very outdated technology and cramped cabin. But reliability is off the charts along with resale.

Of the top ten vehicles that have the longest road life in 2022 Toyota has 5 of them with one being the Tacoma.
