Go to home depot, buy several 5 gallon buckets with lids. Fill the buckets with dried foods. Beans and rice are good starters and will keep many years. Seal the lid with a good tape, and store in a cool dry place.

That's a good idea. Last forever, would be easily tradable.

Never thought of boots and shoes also

Would not use these buckets.

Food grade buckets are what you need.

I subscribe to the theory that plastic if clean, and stored properly, (cool) is safe. Leave the dried foods in the factory packaging and place in the bucket. This will enable almost anyone to begin a 6 month food stockpile for less than the price of a good meal at a restaurant. The key to long term storage is filling the bucket all the way up and a good air tight seal

Depends on where you're at. You can get salt from the ocean. Won't be the same quality but you can do it yourself.

Sailboat is on my short list. I've been talking to some local owners and finding out as much as I can.

Not survival, but a couple days ago I bought a charger that recharges non-rechargeable batteries. Each battery can be recharged to 85% of original capacity about 30 times.

even better than the wire is the pocket chainsaw.

Think about how important socks and shoes will be. Load up on socks while they're cheap and easy to get.

Seriously, I can't think of a single thing more likely to save your family's life from chaos on land than being able to put them offshore for long periods of time with no concern for fuel.

It's a no brainer as far as the decision is concerned, but it's a long learning curve to get to where you can do that with confidence.

Just remember. Man has been doing this for thousands of years. It isn't brain surgery. But there is a lot more to it than most laymen would ever imagine.

I'd rather be on land for a year of SHTF than on a sail boat for 10 minutes of a bad storm.

It would be nice to have. I live in an archipelago with thousands of islands, and would be a benefit to island hop without having to worry about fuel. I want to get one with a diesel engine to, though.

The guy that makes that crovel was on Doomsday Preppers once. If I am not mistaken he shot himself in the hand with a pistol while they were filming him. His thumb was fuct.
