This. A worm is probably your all around best bait. Learning to work it is pretty important.

Old thread on summer-time bass fishing

Check out that link from a thread I started last year about this same time. Might have some additional information in there. Summer is just a tough time to fish, especially late summer.

If you wanna catch big fish go get some jigs and never put them down . Black /blue , black/red , green pumpkin are my favorites . A jig will catch fish when absolutely nothing else will . It's not a bait that you will catch 20 fish everytime you go but you will catch fish without a doubt

When I used to fish summer tournaments on natural bodies of water, we would make sure to never both have jigs on. The guy with the straight crawworm or creature bait would get more bites, but the jig fish would rarely get culled.

Tried jig fishing this weekend at TB but didn't really have any luck. It is a great way to catch some big fish though.

I usually start with topwater before sunup and the first couple of hours of sunlight. I'll try a Yellow Magic popper or a Pop-R and then switch to a Zara Spook towards the end of the topwater bite.

Then I transition to using a spinnerbait/chatterbait and a Senko type of plastic. Usually I would TX rig the plastic with the weight right against the hook but last Summer I had good results pegging the weight anywhere from 8-24" above the hook.

If those methods don't work, I'll try a shaky head or dropshot plastic.

I threw everything in pretty much every color I had. I should have just tied my tackle boxes to my line and threw that out. Just didn't have a lot of luck this past weekend.

This time of year I've had the best luck at Toledo on crankbaits and Texas rigged trick worms.

Find a good deep point and work it good with the crankbait. If I catch a few I'll go back over with the trick worm and usually pick up some more.

Also fishing docks can be awesome in the hot summer time! I caught limits on back to back days one weekend last July fishing the same 6 or 7 docks. Spent maybe 4 hours each day.

We were day drinking around noon and decided to stun some bream and free line them in the middle. Caught three 7's back to back to back off of the pier

I only throw cranks when my butt is being beaten by cranks. Hate throwing them.

White/chartreuse 3/8oz spinner with gold spoons. If nothing bites that, I either leave or throw a worm for a half hour and then leave

I can see how someone would it's tough when you're throwin and throwin and doin all that reelin and not catchin. But when you get in a good school, man, they're hard to beat!

Black and blue or black and green jigs in 3/8 oz around the base of cypress in 6-8' of water will produce at night. Depending on water color, white or white/chartreuse buzz baits and spinner baits. Switch to darker colors when it gets dark. If you like soft plastics, go with red shad, tequila sunrise, motor oil, or tomato.

Have fished the Louisiana side backwater this time of year many times at night. Always catch fish with the above.
