Seems like so much of what I find is old information. Please suggest a good to go make and caliber gun that is good for Louisiana primitive weeks. Tia.

I use a CVA single shot 45-70. It's an older model with a Bergara barrel. Bought it for $250 off some baw that was trying to get money to buy snakes for some sort of collection.

It depends on what you want to spend, but recoil can be an issue for some of the lighter single shots in 45-70. Browning/Winchester 1885s are pretty manageable in 45-70 though.

35 whelen is probably the most ideal caliber choice.

I use a CVA Hunter in 35 Remington, but ammo is hard to find. I HIGHLY recommend getting a CVA Scout in 350 Legend, because ammo is plentiful and super easy to find.

Skip the 45-70. Too much kick. 35 Whelen is the best round if you want a little reach. It’s a 35-06.
I love my .38-55 WIN. Killed a bunch of deer with it, but it doesn’t have much reach. Longest kill was right around 200 yards.

H&R Buffalo in 45-70 is one of the worst kicking rifles I've ever sighted in at the gun range. I got it sighted in in 5 shots, but my shoulder hurt for a few days

CVA Scout in 35 Whelen, bonus points if you can find a used one with the original Bergara barrels.

35 Whalen if you can find ammo for it. Whatever you buy make sure you buy the ammo first.

My 45-70 doesn't bother me at all. Maybe it's heavier. I shoot Hornady leverevolution 325gr.

Most of them that I've shot aren't that bad. Something about the curved stock and the 4' long barrel on that Buffalo H&R.

.444 marlin.
Shoot it year around. My theory thus far is unless you hit it in the arse it will drop. shite an arse shot may drop one, I’ll update if it happens.

Cva scout 2 is the right answer for the rifle. They are cheap and damn accurate.

Caliber, whatever. 35 whelen is the best for reaching out.

Early November is not the time to be looking for 35 Whelen ammo. When you see it for sale in August, June, May, you get a box or two.
