Looking to plant a few trees in the backyard for shade/looks. Have been eyeing a fast growing softwood. However, how hard and expensive would it be to plant a semi-mature hardwood?

Pros/cons of some of the trees y'all have in your yards?

Plant native trees whatever you do. Silver maple grow really fast, but can be a bit messy.

If you live in a hurricane area look up hurricane resistant trees.

That's just me. I prefer native trees to shitty weeds like chinese tallow and other potentially invasive species that take over and choke out native species.

I generally agree, but I just love me a Chinese Elm for a few reasons.

The bigger you go the more expensive it will be. A friend of mine just had two 20' live oaks planted in his yard. They ran about 5k I believe for both.
You can get a couple 4" diameter that would be 8-12 ft prob dependant on spieces but that would run between 500 or so I would guess planted. When you get over that size, price jumps considerable because they take so much more to handle them.

I planted 2 river birch last year

they have already tripled in size, so if you can wait a year, you can typically save a lot of money by just buying the smaller trees

Wait a couple years and you'll hate them. They shed like crazy.

bark or limbs? I like the bark look of them, and they cannot possibly shed more limbs than my giant pecan trees

My dad has a red oak in his back yard we planted in '96. It was just a sapling, now its maybe 30' tall. Slow growing by my standards but looks good when the leaves turn. I hate my Bradford pears. They stink, the leaves suck, and limbs break constantly. My silver maple got some kind of fungus its not going to be ling before I have to cut it down.

Both sides of my driveway are lined with River Birch trees. Like 60 of them. When I first bought the place I was like "damn these trees are awesome". Now I'm like "damn these trees suck a fatty". River birches are huge pussies. Every summer I loose a couple to disease and they shed limbs like a mofo. They do look cool though..

I had 2 of these when I bought my house. Within 2 months, 1 died, and the other split in half.

I will never plant Bradford pears. Too weak.

I also planted a maple in my yard last year about the same time as the river birches. All 3 trees were somewhere around 6'-8' when I planted them. The river oaks are now +20', and the maples is maybe 10'

Maples grow pretty slow. Dad has one in his front yard that's not much more than a twig. It's been planted for two years.

May be soil issues too, in my case anyway. It's a lot of clay here.
