Shot my .308 at the range last week and the casing from the fired round is stuck in the chamber. It’s ammo I have used before so it sounds like something on the round or in the chamber wasn’t clean and now it is stuck. Anyone got any idea on how to get this thing out without causing any damage to the gun?

Remove barrel, insert stick from the loud end?

I figured it was this simple and I have probably over read on this and am worrying too much. To clarify at first I could not get the bolt open. Would lift up but not pull back. Beat on the bolt with a rubber mallet and was able to get it open. So I should be good to go with a rod through there now and get the casing out. I was reading something before saying you could do that with the bolt stuck but to be carful causing damage to something. I guess with the bolt open now though there’s nothing I can really damage haha

I’ve had a similar issue with my 308 tikka, Winchester ammo

Had to get to it from the magazine well

You could shoot some Kroil down the bore.

Wait a few minutes, drop the cleaning rod in and tap with your mallet. Should drop out

Was the bolt handle hard to lift?

That’s a sign of over pressure.

Since the bolt is open just use a wooden dowel or clean rod to tap the stuck case out.

Bolt was easy to lift. It may be over pressure but it was factory ammo that I’ve shot before with no problem. Sounds like the chamber just needs to be cleaned.

If the bolt wasn’t hard to lift, I wouldn’t worry about it.

That doesn't make much sense. The bolt moves backwards when it is rotated open and the case should have been pulled back out of the chamber the first few degrees of bolt turn. Something else is up. If the case was stuck it should have been hard to open. Either the case has to move, or the rim has to get torn off, or the extractor has to let go.

Best explanation I’ve had after talking to gun smiths at this point is that there’s dirt or something in the chamber causing the hang up. Off their recommendations I tapped on the bolt with it all the way up with a rubber mallet. That got the bolt to release. Checked the extractor and it has no damage to it. Going to tap the casing out with a rod tonight and then polish the chamber and get it cleaned up. Once I get the casing out I’m going to inspect it as well and see if anything looks off. It is strange to me that the bolt was able to drop without extracting the casing.

A case stuck in the chamber would usually indicate excessive chamber pressures. That can happen as an isolated event as even factory rounds can have a spike in chamber pressure. A bullet that's deeper in the case than usual can spike the chamber pressure. A chamber that's wet w/ oil can do the same thing. When you clean the gun, be sure the chamber is dry. I'd feel uneasy polishing the chamber. If this happens again, minimize potential damage to the extractor by tapping on the cleaning rod from the muzzle while make rearward taps on the bolt. It's good that pulling the bolt off the stuck spent round didn't shear or damage the extractor. Examine the shot round closely for signs of excessive chamber pressure. This wasn't steel cased ammo w/ a laquer finish was it?

Can also be something as simple as rust in the chamber. I had an SKS that had that problem back in the day. In that case, it made it trash. Depends on the gun and what it's made out of. Whatever the problem, it ain't good.

You had to beat the bolt open with a hammer? That ain't opening easy!

That does make more sense though. Either an overpressure round or trash in the chamber or both.

That happened because the extractor pulled away from the bolt as you pulled the bolt away from the chamber. The forces holding the brass in the chamber were stronger than the spring holding the extractor in place in the bolt. Check your extractor tension really well. Replacement extractors/springs are not expensive and are an easy DIY job.

ETA: What kind of gun is it?

A year ago, I had a similar problem with my 35 wheeling.

I hunted one spot and when I tried to take the bullet out, it would not come out. I used the gun cleaning rod thinking this should be easy to get out. Wrong. I ended up destroying the cleaning rod and the bullet, but finally got it out.
I cleaned the action and oiled it really good and it worked good. But this year, I had the same problem again.

Since then, I learned that when opening the "break action" to take out the bullet..... this must be done with a "snap action" to have the shell pop out. I was gently opening the barrel and the bullet was staying in the chamber.
