Stick with it. I never dipped, but smoked for 6-7 years (built up to almost 2 packs/day).

I "quit" numerous times - finally actually, permanently quit, cold-turkey over 40 years ago. There were a lot of activities that made quitting hard - the ones where I was accustomed to smoking (drinking, poker, shooting pool, etc.). But after a few years I couldn't stand the smell of tobacco.

You can do it.

I guess what I’m saying is you’ll be fine unless you’re sipping a can a day every day. Then you’ll probably lose a few teeth or have some lip cut out
Tell that to my friend -- had major surgery to mouth, palate & throat. His only source of nutrition has been thru a feeding tube (stomach port) for the past 3 years.

Shite a duck hunting buddy of ours in Monroe that is a dentist chews, not dips. He said that is better since you move it around a lot and it doesn't stay in one place.

You can move dip around........ In fact my dentist told me to do this as the inner mouth heals very quickly.

question from one who's never dipped: is it the chemical addiction of the nicotine or the physical motion habit of dipping?

I had this same exact question and I see someone already said it’s a bit of both. Bc the nicotine can be replaced by other ways like gum or patches and weaned off. And maybe the ritual can be replaced by other things like toothpicks or sunflower seeds.

And I’d think cold Turkey is not required either. If you have the discipline to only dip on certain occasions. Easier said than done I realize.

That's just what it is, a ritual. Nothing quite like having a dip in right at shooting time on a duck hunt, fishing, cleaning a deer, working/studying, or driving some redundant boring road. It literally becomes a way of life while doing those activities to the point that you associate the pleasure of doing those activities with having a dip in. Yes, you can substitute a dip with those activities and get over the mental side of it with time but it is a major hurdle. You will always struggle with it because of the association. However, my main reason to quit was I would just get a dip for the sake of getting a dip. That's where I was able to beat it cold turkey. If I could just dip only when I did fun stuff I would probably be ok but that is the line most people end up crossing.

I know a guy who chews tobacco and drinks a beer at the same time. That is very disgusting to watch.

The level of denial in this thread is amazing. A dentist is not an oncologist. The hard fact is Dipping, chewing, smoking, drinking and non- healthy eating habits are bad for you ..,period. Now as a grown arse adult you can choose to walk down these paths all you want but in the end each one of these habits has the ability to shorten a life span. You’re playing the genetic lottery and tempting fate each time these substances are introduced to your body. As long as someone understands and accepts the potential health hazards then roll on. The problem is most people will need the support of loved ones to help them thru a cancer diagnosis and that does not seem to be a fair ask if it is caused by a bad habit.

It took me two times to quit, but the second time I used that Smokey mountain molasses snuff to get through the cravings. Used it for about a year off and on. I don’t even think about dipping anymore

100% spot on. Although there might not be total proof that dipping caused that kind of cancer with most people that get that diagnosis, I know for certain that my wife would tell me it was probably brought on by my poor choice of bad habits if I did in fact get it. I know this because she would tell me all the time when I would get a dip in front of her that I am taking the risk of not getting to walk my daughter down the isle every time I did. Finally hit home.

I'm seven months in. I just don't go into gas stations to buy anything. Get gas at pump and roll. Large packs of gum and toothpicks have been carrying me. I tried the coffee pouches but they made it worse. I associate dipping with driving so its been way harder than expected. 15yr habits die hard...

I quit for 1 yr once before and ended up 'stealing' a single dip from a friend while fishing and next thing I knew I was dipping again full time. I'll never take another dip in my life. DONE.

I had a dream last night and in it I put a dip in my mouth. I remember thinking "wtf are you doing? one slip up and it's back to 1.5 cans per day"
