That is the biggest copperhead I've ever seen! I would have pissed myself if I stepped on him.

Dang... That's the biggest one I've ever seen. Don't know what the world record is, but that one is surely it or close to it.

I've never seen one that big either . Maybe Three feet is the biggest I've ever seen . Almost looks like a Rattler . I've seen a couple people bitten by Copperheads and they can really frick your day up . They are the most aggressive snakes I've been around .

My experience is they are the most docile of the vipers..

After looking at more snakes, I think it may be a canebrake because of its pattern and length.

Still a badass belt.

Seriously go find that damn thing now. Could be a world record. Would make a hell of a belt. Some taxidermist would love it.

Didn't have rattles. Don't think it could be a rattle less rattler. Does that exist? Serious question.

That belt may fit around his gut. Fathers day is coming up.

I looked. I threw it on top of a stump to keep someone else from stepping on it. It's gone

I don't see that faint orange stripe down the backbone like a timber or canebrake is supposed to have? Looks like a copperhead to me, but I ain't no expert by any means on legless reptiles. I do know this much, though: IF you killed a potential world record copperhead here in Virginia, and showed it to the authorities, you would most likely be in some big time trouble with Green Jeans and the judge. All snakes are protected here and there is no season at all on them. I had people calling me every now and then wanting me to mount one for them. Had to tell em what the law said. That's why you'll never see me post any pics of any snake I "might" have killed. We can't even possess rattlesnake rattles here without the legal documentation showing they came from outside the state of Virginia. I'd check Louisiana snake regulations before I showed that one or any snake to the authorities...

Record southern copperhead is apparently 4'-4". I'm actually a little upset now. I knew it was a big snake, but I never considered it being a potential record. I asked dad if he wanted to go back and look one more time but he just laughed and said no. He apparently doesn't care too much. He's just glad it's deceased.

Very rare for the rattlesnakes found in the Southeastern US, and usually only if there was damage to the tail. (There is a rattlesnake on the Santa Catalina Islands off Baja, Mexico that doesn't have one though.) And the snake you killed isn't a Canebrake, the pattern is different.

It is rather large for a Copperhead--if it's as big as you suspect, it would probably be close to, if not bigger than, the record.

Question: Did you measure it when you had it or are you judging size based on the pic and your dad's height? If the latter, then perspective may be skewed (and it might not be as large as it appears) as he is probably holding it a bit away from him. There's a good blog somewhere about snake pics and perspective; mostly about non-existent 11-ft. long rattlesnakes which are actually much smaller once perspective is taken into account. Not saying that snake isn't huge, but sometimes it's hard to tell from a picture.

Choupique , I've had a couple come straight after me almost like a racer would . Freaked me out . Once when I was squirrel hunting and another time fishing . Never had any snake but a Blue racer actually come at me .

Well...you got pics and witnesses, but no snake. The OB knows you kilt a world record. Look on the bright side, though: If you had kept it and turned it in, your name and picture might be in TWO record books: world records and jail house records...

I figured the pic is a little skewed. But he held that thing out to his side and with the tail slightly draped on the ground an inch or so that snake went to his jaw. I figured it would reach the bottom of his nose or top of his lip if it were straightened up. Dads between 5'-8" and 5'-9" and closer to 5'-9". There is no doubt in my mind that the snake is at least 5' and I'm damned sure it was over 4'-4".

I've had racers charge me on land.

I've had many water snakes charge me in the Amite.

Good thing when I'm wakeskating, I'll piss myself a little when they swim charge but wont have to change my shorts.
