It's always been greys to me. First I ever heard "Gadwall" was up here in Bama.
Who has ever heard a widgeon called a "Baldpate". I've seen it in text, but never heard someone actually call it that. Is that some kind of Yankee BS?
I've heard Woodies called Squelers long before the influx of the illegal immigrant long legged bastards.

I say gadwall only when speaking with people who fish for "crappie".

In SE Texas it appears the dividing line is Houston for Grey/Gadwall, every thing on LA side of Houston calls them Greys, everything S of Houston calls them Gadwall in my experience.

Those people from S Houston pronounce it HOWston too?

Dosgris is a scaup/bluebill, baws. Not a ring neck
Those two, though similar in appearance, are typically heralded as very different on the dinner table, blackjacks/ring necks/ringers being the better of the two, hence their Cajun name "Butterballs"
grays is a local thing, gadwall if not from around here, or "gaddies".
and for the life of me, call them mottled ducks, yes that's "mottled" from their mottled feather pattern, not "model ducks"......jeeez

No doubt. I'd love to kill one to mount but we really don't see too many.
