Had a thread earlier in the week about how the tuna fishing has gone to shite. Now a thread about changing the speckled trout limit because it’s gone to shite.

Until we start regulating the charter folks like the commercial fisherman they really are, they’re going to keep depleting our resources.

I say leave the recreational limit alone and drop the for hire limit to 15/person.

I've always said the charters should be able to help catch a sport their limits, but should NEVER be allowed to give their extra limit to a sport.

3 sports on a boat should = 3 limits....not 4

They are not suppose to unless they actually fish.

I completely agree. Not all, but many charters/commercial folks take and take without putting anything back but are the first to poor mouth the minute a natural resource runs thin and want government help.

I know a waterfowl guide that had a customer get ticketed for shooting over the limit - because the guide never picked up a gun and it was on video with the customer shooting 3 birds over his limit - but claimed by the guide.

I totally agree and have been advocating this for years.

I have plenty of friends that are guides and are great people and provide a great service. However due to them fishing every day they are always on the fish. I have no problem with that but I would love to find a way to slow down their impact on the fishery without hurting their way of making a living.

I think eliminating the guides limit on a charter is a great first step. I have discussed with many charter captains and they have also supported it, however I suspect there would be push back on such a change.

I’m all for it, easier to say it’s against the law than explain the conservation angle. Blee it or not but the Texans are typically more conservation minded than folks from La.

15/person on a guided trip, not including the guide.

20/person for non-guided fishermen.

25/person for kids 16 and under.

Size limit moved to 13" for everyone.

What you’re describing is called sector separation and I’m surprised it hasn’t gotten more publicity considering it’s now the system used for red snapper. Splitting the quota into three groups allowed for the establishment of three separate seasons and people seem overall pleased with it.

Wouldn’t it seem logical for guides to want lower fish limits for less pressure and for them to get back to the docks at a decent time? Texas and Florida have like 5 man limit on trout and they catch some mules.

Highly doubt it. Just a hunch but I’d assume they’d bitch and whine if their limits were less than the regular recreational limit.

they will bitch and whine but behind closed doors will be all for it...... but expecting different limits for guided and non guided trips...that ain't happening.

A ton of the people contributing to the problem could at least start paying their damn taxes while we come up with a solution to the fishing problem.

its really easy, just make it illegal for guides to posses fish while on a charter. if they want their fish they can go one their own, as they do anyway.

they only want this perk so they can fill, or help fill customers limits for them

there is no justified reason they can claim they shouldnt be required to fish "off the clock" if they want to take fish for themselves.

unless they want to falsely try to claim somehow its impossible for them to fish unless its with a charter

Your not wrong but the number of times speck guides are totally limiting out, including their share is very rare

show me one scientist that says the fishery will be improved by reducing limits, you cant, because all scientists agree there is no data suggesting limits should be reduced and all the data they have proves the fishery is very healthy and could even support increasing limits.

the only reason for the "short term" reduced numbers of fish is the reoccurring hard freezes over the past few years at very inopportune times that reduced the numbers of fish being landed but this is a normal weather related fluctuation and there is no issue that needs to be addressed by any regulation changes as stated by the scientists who keep track of these things and verified scientific evidence to back up their conclusions
