Forget the garbage Shimano has been making for the last several years. Daiwa Tatula or Lew heavy duty. Breaking systems work goo and make learning easier. Us old guys learned on ambassador 5500 and frustration was like taking bad tasting medicine.

No matter the brand, even Shimano and Daiwa, the combos are terrible.

I agree and separates with a much better rod can be had for well under $200.

Bought my son a Shimano SLX DC. He loves to fish and we go often. Money well spent. I learned on an Am ambassador 5000. Spent a bunch of time getting what looked like hairy snatch untangled than fishing.

The DC will be a little better than the regular SLX since you’re going to also use for saltwater.

Food for thought. A good reel will last 10yrs. A shitty reel won’t last one.

Someone posted a good sale on the Daiwa Coastal recently.

*this was a general post and not a direct response to the poster above me. Tatula is a fine reel.

You must not fish much or have no clue what you’re talking about. Shimano is the leader is freshwater reels. No questions asked

I'm an Abu Garcia fanboy so take this with a grain of salt

I have 5 5500C3 reels, and decided I needed something that I could beat and bang around without care... i ended up getting an AG Max and it has been my workhorse... $80 at Academy, combined with a Medium Fast Falcon rod, and that sucker is the first thing I reach for each and every time... out the door at $150

I own about 20 rods and reels, but that set up is the best I own... I have some of the best Shimano, St. Croix, Diawa... but the one combo I have caught more fish on is an AG baitcaster on a Falcon MF rod.. it holds up, takes punches, and still delivers

Got my kid an SLX 70HG. Learned how to use it the first day. Proud of him.

Just bought my son(10) a kastking centron for his first reel for $35 on amazon. That’s the amount I was willing to part with when he abandons it by the neighborhood pond because a pickup baseball game started close by

Whatever you buy, after spooling up properly make a long cast. Take a small piece of masking tape and put it on the line at this point the. Reel in the cast. This will limit how bad his backlash es will go until he masters casting. Many pros suggesting this when learning to skip docks. Works well and will save you a bunch of headaches. Ask me how I know.

Im team Alx on this one, you can come out much cheaper than 300, then you also need to teach him with no brakes, he will thank you later. You eventually have to be able to brake it yourself, may as well learn from the start. I tried the combo stuff and the reels are just bad. The SLX is my go to, paired with a decent rod in the 100 dollar range and you are in it for 200.

Maybe I got lucky, got both my boys a couple green and orange Lews rod n reel combos and so far so good.

It’s not their everyday setup anymore but they still use them.

H2O Mettle.
Now $70
Was $50.

Watched my then 11y/o son hook, fight, and then land a 32" bull red with one and have been convinced ever since. He still has and uses that same reel today(he is 23y/o now) It's never been cleaned, etc. I now have several.

Worth every penny.

I would go with a Daiwa Tatula SV or a Shimano SLX DC

I have a few curado dc’s, just ordered a custom kistler flippin rod and needed a reel for it. Went to buy another curado dc for that rod but they didn’t have the gear ratio I wanted. Ended up getting the slx dc instead, and I’ve been really impressed by it. I highly recommend it. Have a couple tatula sv’s also, and they’re nice, but for someone starting out, I would go with the slx dc.
