When the average fish has increased from 5# to 12#, because there are so many more big mature snapper.....then we hit the quota earlier. Go figure.

I would love to know how they get their estimated numbers.

It a hell of a lot better than the feds were doing.

They have guys at the docks taking numbers and they do email surveys too

Yes closed Sunday when none of us realized it was the last day. I think most of us figured a close this weekend or next not somewhat retroactively. Oh well it was a great year for the endangered red snapper.

How do they determine when the quota is met? Do they just have people at every single dock counting and looking for people who caught Red Snapper?

Surveys as mentioned and ROLP app. We do a trip report on the app every time we go out. Document number of fish caught. LA Creel program is what ended up getting us the state control. Way better now than it had gotten with the feds giving us 6-9 day seasons.

Last year I think they closed it 8/1 ish, compiled their numbers, and decided to open it back up to private recreational for the weekends until the quota was met. As of 7/26/20 private recreational was roughly 175k lbs short of the quota, that's a lot of fish in 2 weeks. Of course factors are different from last year with people having a lot more free/family time on their hands to go fish, but that's still a lot of fish in 2 weeks. The question is, will the same thing happen this year and they open it back up for weekends only again.

Fingers crossed, my new boat delivers Friday, was really hoping to break it in on some easy snapper trips before shrimp boat season...

(not that this matters)

To play devil's advocate the more big snapper kept means less of the breeding stock

I agree w that.

Really depends on how they want to manage the fishery. Purely for quota or stock based?

I would like to see it at 4 with a slot of between 14" and 20". With one Over fish per limit. Protect the larger breeders. Basically if you're dropping on big snapper, leave and go fish somewhere else. There are tens of millions of good eating sized snapper out there.

I wish it was 4 a person, the first 4 you catch. I know itd be unenforceable though
