I have never been asked.

i get asked all the time... at the dock, phone calls, emails.

if you aint being asked youre lucky...and probably fishing from a boat moored at a private residence...because if you are using a public launch or lift you are most likely gonna be asked...in florida you can't leave the hill without being stopped at least a couple of times but I have seen the situation aint near as bad in the rest of the gulf....

Move it back to 4!

I would like to see it at 4 with a slot of between 14" and 20". With one Over fish per limit. Protect the larger breeders. Basically if you're dropping on big snapper, leave and go fish somewhere else. There are tens of millions of good eating sized snapper out there.

Hard species to manage because they are highly agressive as all snappers are....even with the screwed up regs now the fishing is better when it is open than it has been in years. The problem with the season, in my mind, is releasing fish caught in 100 feet of water ain't something most people can do succesfully....if survival of the fish is the goal. Way too many bottom fish are caught accidentally out of season, vented and die from the experience...I would bet its close to the same number as fish caught and kept during the season.

Agree with this.

and they do email surveys too

That's the only time I would ever call a 10 lb fish 5 lb's or less!

Disclaimer.....
I have not Snapper fished this year so I have not and would not lie to Mr. Green Jeans by E-Mail survey.

It has gotten so bad that our grouper rocks in 400-500ft range have been taken over by the 15lb snappers. Painful. Also tough to get mangroves with all the reds.

Feds require a 20% buffer for rec quotas.

I wish it was 4 a person, the first 4 you catch

That makes way to much sense for FedGov, it is far better to kill a few on release than do anything sensible.

To play devil's advocate the more big snapper kept means less of the breeding stock

This is only under the assumption that the population is averaging the same size as years past. If the population is now on avg bigger, than taking bigger fish on avg now is not effecting the breeding stock anymore than in the past. If the avg population size is now larger, in fact the breeding stock is effected less now even with bigger fish harvested. It’s a percentage thing not a purely numbers thing.

Yeah, David Cresson posted something last weekend saying it looked like we'd hit the number based on the weather conditions and the amount of people fishing. Based on what I've read in this thread looks like a bunch of people don't participate in the ROLP. So we probably went over even with those people responding they had 12# snapper that actually weighed 5#.
