So, a local gun store up here in Indiana implemented a new rule for ammo purchases...

“You can only buy one box per firearm purchase.”
So, I ask, “so, one person buys a gun and a box of ammo. That said person shoots that box for target practice. You’re telling me they have to come back and purchase another gun just to get another box of ammo?”
“Yes, it’s just not fair for someone to spend $700 for a gun and not have anything at all.”
I don’t know why they just don’t put a limit on one box per customer. I didn’t really want to ask. I just rolled my eyes and left.

If they’re still selling all of their ammo, then it’s a pretty smart move!

Um, why don’t they just hold back one box of ammo per gun they have in stock and sell the rest.

This fairly common these days. Jim's Firearms in BR is doing pretty much the same thing.

Not unusual when I was in the business back in the Obama days we did it pretty often on certain calibers.

That’s good business. Why sell someone a useless paper weight? You’ll have a better customer if you get them started right.

I use to do this. Yes, the guy that buys all his guns from you is getting better access to ammo than the guy that buys all his guns from Buds/KYgunco/PSA etc.

That would be the smart thing that many places are doing. That’s perfectly understandable rule. Only need one box per gun in inventory.

Unless I’m misunderstanding, OP says the store isn’t selling any ammo unless a gun is bought. Which is crazy.
But holding back a box for every gun does make perfect sense.
I bought a revolver from Academy three weeks ago and still have no fricking bullets for it.

Put one box per gun in back for when people buy.
Sell everything else
Sell everything else

And all of a sudden the 50$ they saved on a purchase of a gun seems trivial when they were wishing they could just call “bob” at the gun store and say “hey ol boy save me some boolets”!!

That might be what they’re doing, but it didn’t come across that way. What sucks though is the ability to buy more. Who buys a gun and has no plans to shoot it? The point is to practice, and if stores are hoarding it to sell firearms, that kinda hurts the consumer more than buying a gun and not having any bullets.
The customer has to decide if they want to practice or hoard the one box for “just in case”.
The gun could be defective, turns out, the shooter can’t operate it, and freaks out during a high stress time when he actually needs it. The customer is no better off with the ammo than without at the time of purchase in those scenarios. Especially first time buyers that’ve never shot a gun.

Lead time on ammo orders right now is around a year.
If they sell all the ammo they have they won’t be able to replenish it anytime soon and would then be selling paper weights when the sell all their current guns.

Place I buy guns at keeps a small amount of ammo in the back specifically for new gun purchases. They won’t sell that ammo unless you buy a gun. But what they put out on the shelves is first come, first serve no limits.
