’d go with racers. A lot of the cottons I catch are pretty relaxed after I grab them. Some put up a big defensive display but most just try to flee . I can count on one hand how many racers I’ve caught that didn’t try to bite the frick out of me. I hate catching water snakes, ribbons, and garters because they musk you every time. I’d rather get bitten than musked. And as much as cottons have a reputation for being smelly, I honestly don’t notice any smell when I’m holding them and have only been musked maybe once or twice (and I’ve caught 35 in a little over a year). I’d honestly rather pick up a cottonmouth than a ribbon snak

coachwhip..... but Moccasins are just so damned strong for their size... don't like holding them at all.....

went to scottsdale about 15 years ago, played golf 3 days was surprised how docile westerns were compared to cane breaks, easterns(only a handfull of encounters in FL whilst in Navy) and of course mocs.. acted much like over sized copperheads with rattles.. almost gentlemanly like.

Yup, looks like a cotton with a water snake head.

How does someone get into this? Did you just start picking up cottonmouths one day?

For me, pretty much.
Been catching snakes for 50 years but avoided grabbing venomous because I was a dentist and needed my fingers. After I retired, one day I just said frick it and started handling venomous too.

That’s pretty interesting.

Have you ever got got by a venemous snake?

Where would you direct someone to learn about snakes and how to handle them?

Haven’t been bitten by anything venomous yet. There are probably some decent online or youtube resources for learning. But the best way is to partner up with someone experienced and learning firsthand in the field.

ETA: A lot of state/national parks and WMAs, particularly Jean Lafitte Barataria Preserve, have trails where you can literally just walk down a boardwalk and see multiple snakes (sometimes dozens) just a few feet away.

The leaf you show in the lower right of the first photo is similar to the irregular aberrant patch on the snake. A copperhead is camouflaged to look like leaves.

Nice catch. Even when aberrant, they blend into those leaves like a mofo.

Interesting ratio of species. Does it normally fall where there are more nonvenomous snakes by a wide margin?

Yes, in general. Occasionally you run across a spot loaded with cottonmouths. When I walk the creek around my property, I’ll see 10 cottonmouths for every nonvenomous water snake. Also had a spot around Raceland where I saw 26 cottonmouths in one day, and just a few nonvenomous snakes. But aside from that, almost everywhere I go is mostly full of nonvenomous.

This post is refreshing, I was 100% expecting something like the snake rodeo's idiots have to decimate snake populations in their area this time of year. I wish he would have stumbled across a mud snake, those are gorgeous.

A mud snake was at the top of my Utah guest’s list. We worked hard looking for them, including a spot we shined at night a couple times that is full of big amphiumas (the only thing mud snakes eat). In fact, the night before we hit that spot, someone caught 2 mud snakes there. The nights we hit it, the weather was a bit cool though. No luck while he was here, but I’m hitting that site often the next couple months.

I would have killed every single one of those. I hate all snakes. I’m fine with killing every one I see and knowing that I killed some good ones along with the bad.
