Snake week

My son’s friend flew down from Utah last week so I could take him around Louisiana to catch snakes and shoot video for his upcoming new youtube channel (he has over 1.4 million subscribers on one of his channels). We found 80 snakes covering 9 different species, and we caught at least one of each species. Our final tally was 47 broad-banded watersnakes, 19 ribbon snakes, 5 black-masked racers, 3 cottonmouths, 2 ringnecks, 1 diamondback water snake, 1 glossy swampsnake, 1 Western rat snake, and 1 copperhead. The highlight of the trip for me was catching my first aberrant copperhead. Found it in a beautiful natural pose, resting vertically against a mossy railroad tie, then discovered its cool aberrant pattern. Another gem was a cottonmouth with a very black face and belly - very different from the cottons I catch here in Folsom. The hottest spot was at the Jean Lafitte Barataria Preserve, where we found 45 snakes and 6 gators.

That last broadband would get mistaken for a cotton mouth by most people. (tip for those people: vertical bands on head = water snake, horizontal band across head = danger noodle)

I may have posted these before: buddy in the first pic caught this 6'5" rattler in some old lady's backyard a few years back a couple of miles from my home in Scottsdale (check out the size of that rattle). He owns a pest removal business and said it's not even the longest- he caught one just over 7'. The bottom pic I found trying to get in my garage when I was working on my motorcycle. He was persistent about getting some shade!

Have you ever caught any canebrakes? I think I saw my first one on the edge of the pond behind my neighbors house. I’m usually pretty good at identifying snakes but have never seen a diamondback water snake that was this thick or bright in color. I did see a good size king right behind our fence so that’s reassuring but with small children it’s still very unsettling

For sure - in fact that’s why I chose that pic out of the dozens of broad-banded pics. Definitely one of the most cottonmouth- looking water snake patterns I’ve seen. It’s amazing how much variation broad-bandeds have. I could post a half dozen different ones I photographed and most people would swear they were all different species.

I’ve never run across one but it’s high on my list. I’ve hit a spot in New Orleans East a couple times looking for them but I usually make it a quick stop because I’m too worried about dying there - and not from the rattlesnakes.
I need to find a good spot for them that is safer to hunt.

Truth. When I first spotted it I was just excited to see it in a very photogenic pose. When we noticed the aberrant pattern, it instantly became my favorite catch ever.

He’s high on my list too but it’s a different list with small children that love to play in the back yard. Hopefully he’s high on that kings list too! Had it been anywhere else and not my back yard I wouldn’t really care but not only the kids, my German shepherd would go in on that thing with guns blazing

Not sure, but I don't think the majority of posters share your love of snakes, including me.

We had one of those watersnakes on our sidewalk last week. He struck at my wife, but didn't bite. He was backed into a corner by the garage and wanted some space.
I had to put myhairy eye ball on him to make sure it wasn't a mocassin. He slithered away.
Which snakes have the worst attitude when caught? I hear cottonmouths do.

I like shoving a shovel into their back pattern after I chop its head off/ set it on fire.

Pretty snakes. I used to catch snakes near creeks that ran behind the house I grew up. Caught a few copperhead, and had no idea at the time they were dangerous. I was like 12 years old.

I’d go with racers. A lot of the cottons I catch are pretty relaxed after I grab them. Some put up a big defensive display but most just try to flee . I can count on one hand how many racers I’ve caught that didn’t try to bite the frick out of me. I hate catching water snakes, ribbons, and garters because they musk you every time. I’d rather get bitten than musked. And as much as cottons have a reputation for being smelly, I honestly don’t notice any smell when I’m holding them and have only been musked maybe once or twice (and I’ve caught 35 in a little over a year). I’d honestly rather pick up a cottonmouth than a ribbon snake.

I don’t kill eastern diamondbacks. They’re getting more and more rare. I usually let all of them go but like in the case of last summer I killed a big canebrake that was on the edge of a property that has kids that play in the yard.

Aberrants are basically anything that deviates from the normal pattern. A typical copperhead would have a uniform pattern similar in shape to Hershey’s kisses, with those triangular bands on each side connecting over its back, like this one I caught last year.
The one I caught has irregular shaped bands that, like choupiquesushi said, don’t connect - in addition to some bands joined together.
An extreme aberrant would be the striped pattern that’s becoming more common lately.
There are lots of aberrant patterns coming out of Mississippi lately. I was stoked to catch one in East Baton Rouge.

Nice pictures but I would be 4 bullets short today.
