Yeah it is gas water heater. We are in the middle of a renovation due to Ida so the only thing in that room is the water heater. I the doggie door propped open. I also put a mini trap in there with a lizard in it. Maybe it will go eat it and get stuck.

if you have rodents, the snake is better.. he will leave when food source is gone.

We don't anymore. It would have been helpful last year.
Can the snake get into the water. I was thinking there has to be a layer between the outside case and the tank and it was most likely in that in between area

Better figure it out soon. Nothing smells much worse than a rotting snake.
Throw some moth balls under the water heater.

call the nuisance animal control people in your area to get them to remove it...

We called one and he said it would be $400 to come out. So we are not going that route.

Had a similar thing happen a few years ago when one got in through the dryer vent into our dryer. I turned on the dryer and all of a sudden it stopped. We had to leave to catch a plane for the Labor Day weekend, and on the Tuesday after Labor Day, my wife called the handy man, who found the rat snake, about 5', caught in the dryer blower, still alive. Luckily he was a snake guy, could smell it so knew what he was dealing with and pulled the dryer outside and removed the snake. That was an interesting experience.

How is there an opening to actually get in the water heater?
Probably through the little pilot access cover that many leave off after having to remove it a couple of times.

Any suggestions on how to get a snake out of a water heater?
Why? Do you want a water heater that is full of rats instead?

Just shut the lights out close the door and it will come out on it’s own if it’s able too.
In collage me and some friends would order snakes all the time and hang out for UPS to show up with them the next day. Buddy orders a reticulated python that’s supposed to be able 5-7’ and tame. What came out the pillowcase when opened was a hell fire pissed off 11-12’ retic. Everyone jumped back and it made a b-line the fridge. It proceeded to go up in the back and coil around the compressor filling up that entire area with one muscular brick house of a ball. We had to shut the lights of and sit on the sofa until it decided to come back out and 2 of us could jump on it. Needless to say that guy didn’t keep it for that long

Let me ask you this. How do get mud in the tires?

Is this a serious question?

Yes this is a serious question. Sorry I don't know the full workings of a water heater. From the diagrams I have looked it, they appear to be sealed and the snake would be in-between the out case and the actual tank.

It ended up being a rattlesnake…

A couple years ago my next door neighbor comes over and asks me if I’m afraid of snakes. I say, “Well, I’m not afraid of them, but I have a healthy respect for them. What’ya got?” He tells me that they saw a large snake go under their outdoor hot tub.
So I go next door with him and he shows me where it went. His wife is saying she’ll never use the tub again if we don’t get it out. There’s an access door on the side and the snake is somewhere under the tub. I tell him, I’ve got just the thing to get him out of there quick.
I go back to my house and grab a bug bomb and a rake. I removed the access door, pressed the button on the bomb and put it inside the frame of the tub and put the access door back on. Within a minute, a 5 foot long rat snake comes crawling out from underneath the hot tub. The husband and wife both scream and run away. I put the rake across behind his head, grab him by the head and carried him to the back fence and threw him in the field behind their house. The wife was upset because I didn’t kill it.

If you have visual confirmation that it’s still in there and it is accessible, I’ll come get him for free. I know snakes, but I don’t know water heater disassembly.

I’ve caught a dozen different species this year, including 30+ cottonmouths, but I’ve yet to find a rat snake this year. And practically every snake I see posted on social media is a damn rat snake. They are hiding in plain sight.
