Saw this rascal while cutting shooting lanes near one of my creek bottom stands. Very interesting color/markings. He had to be nearly 4' long and as big around as my forearm (the leaves around him are magnolia leaves). He didn't mess with me so I let him go his way.

That thick body down to a slim tail real quickly makes me think it’s a moc. That and that arrow head.

Water Mocassin I don’t have any doubt. I think I see the pit just forward of the eye.

If you want to go further, the scale pattern on top of the head matches a moccasin. That’s a Kongo’..

Looks like a cottonmouth to me because of the ridge over its eyes. You can see a watersnake's eyes when looking from above

Absolutely 100% non-venomous. One of the umpteen species of water snakes.

Could be a cottonmouth, but the color doesn't seem quite right and I don't see any of the banding you would typically see. If I ran into that I would keep my distance though.

The picture isn’t defined enough but depends on the pupils O vs ().

Little brown for a typical moccasin

When I first saw him, the sun was shinning right on him and he almost glowed like a brass pan in the sun. By the time I pulled my camera out the sun went behind the clouds and the glow was gone.

I knew he was a moccasin, I have seen thousands in South Louisiana. This one was up at my lease at Toledo Bend. I have other close ups of his head that show the pit, eyes, etc.

He was a Grand dad (or mother). I have only seen one larger back in 1972 and it was 76.5 inches (and dead). This one was no where near as large, but I bet if I stretched it out it had to approach 4 foot long.

Funny thing, I took a lot of pics and even got really close. I finished cutting shooting lanes all around him for at least 30-40 minutes and he never moved once. A very chill dude.

I had a .45 on my hip, not once did I think of putting him down. He paid his dues, minded his own business, and graced that bottom with his beauty for many years. He deserves to go quietly into that good night.

Share a few more pics? Any of the side of his face?

That is 1000% cottonmouth

Just an aberrant coloration. It’s wet, so it looks more shiny than usual
