I am pretty sure it is a water snake, but why is he so not flat and headed?
I think we should kill all of em until they quit trying to be something they are not.

but that head aint right.

not sure i see the stripes you're referring to? Under the head?

Those water snakes will flatten their heads out like that when they get startled.
ETA It is usually inadvisable for an everyday person to get close enough to a water snake or a mocassin for the common man to be able to tell the difference via a picture.

Why not? You can walk faster than either can move. Walk up to him and check him out.

For the amount of time some people on this board claim to spend outside, very few seem to know shite about snakes.
Why would anyone post that this snake was a water snake without being 100% sure? It clearly is not, it's very clearly a Water Moccasin, and this guy's wife could have gotten fricked up with that bad info.

My $ on CM. To me the flattened body lends itself more to CM than WS. I will say that his banding is rather prominent for a mature CM (usually look more black when they get bigger/older, bands fade). Either way; he's a dead serpent if I encounter him.

Look in the mirror, buddy. You’re throwing a lot of shade for a dude that clearly doesn’t “know shite about snakes.”
It’s a banded water snake. Be better.

For the amount of confidence some people seem to have, why the hell would anyone post their answer while being 100% wrong?
No, because she had it killed before the post was even made.

Yea the pattern was screaming banded watersnake but what was getting me was the shade of the head. Was just looking CMish from the pic. I would put monies on a banded water snake.

Oh, and look at tail length. Cottons of that size don't have that.

It really matters geographically where this picture was taken.
These snakes patterns change wildly depending on location and age.

Doesn't matter, it's not a cotton mouth.

Kill it just for looking like a moccasin
