This. I hate how similar they can look. I kill indiscriminately to be sure

The head outline in the second pic tells me it's a CM, I could be wrong

This is the exact example of the snake that will be treated as a venomous one regardless, esp holding it's head at 45*
Would be treated as a moccasin regardless if it is a diamond back water snake

Next time flip it over and take a pic of the belly.

I agree with the water snake ID. He has his head flattened out but the shape of the nose end is still too rounded to be a moccasin. Sad. Old guy lost his life just trying to find a frog.

Evolution made him look like a Cottonmouth for deterrence. But evolution just got him killed.

It's not a water snake. It's a pit viper with that triangle head. I believe it is a water moccasin. It's been forever since I've seen one but I thought they were more gray which is why I confused it with a copperhead previously.

Many species of snakes can flatten their heads to mimic that triangular shape associated with pit vipers. That is NOT a good identifying criteria.

Feeling like a banded watersnake from those 2 pics. I can see a argument for CM but I still think banded.

Water but I’d still chop chop.

I understand why this was difficult for many, but it really should not be. A cottonmouth is going to have in tact bands all the way down the body. They will almost never have just a single stripe. Plus, the head is all wrong. Pic #1 is classic water snake profile and a cotton mouth is incapable of making that shape. Pic two is what you get from an alarmed water snake.

thats one of the bad ones

water moccasin 100%. Mask around the eyes is a dead give away. Shape of the head means nothing when it comes to telling the difference between it and a water snake.

Can you expound on this? I searched images for both but couldn't see what you posted. What am I missing? I would love to find a quicker way to ID these. Any help would be appreciated.

See the overall pattern of the band here:
Those continue all the way down the snake like this juvi:
The snake in the OP has none of these, and has several areas of a single stripe instead of the patterned stripe of a cotton mouth.

Got it; thank you very much. I appreciate it.

I don't kill many snakes but if I can't tell what it is quickly it is dead.
The snake in the OP would be dead if I found it. No need to study it very long and let it slip away to scare the crap out of the family another day.
