13 year old has asked for a 12 ga for Christmas. He has shot a M2 20 ga for the last two seasons and I think it is the best shotgun I have ever shot.

I never really liked my SBE2 but do like the Retay I won last year at a banquet.

Would like to spend less than 1k if I can, but this will be his leave home and use forever shotgun.

Any recommendations. I dont spend alot of time researching so dont know much about the Beretta lineup.

TIA

Franchi is a good option if you're keeping it below $1,000.

60 years ago dad got me a 20 gauge, single shot, crack barrel. Simple, indestructable. About as safe as you can get. Its on my wall currently with my other guns

He has cycled thru the single shot, then a youth .20, now this M2.

I bought them because I have 2 boys. And a wife that will want to hunt occasionally. Then I have the prospect of grandkids in the future that may need to use em.

I would like to have a shotgun, .22, and a rifle with decent optics for them to be able to go wherever they need and have decent gear as they leave the house and start their own adventures outdoors.

Are you going to allow the sons to store the gun in their own closet. Are they going hunting with friends. 13 year olds can mess up with complex equipment

See if you can find him an M2 in 12 gauge.

If you want to try something else, look at the Beretta A300.

Spend 2K and get a Beretta A400 for a lifetime shotgun.

IMO the best duck gun and I've had them all!

WIth the rest in the safe, and not initially, but when they drive I can see them slipping out for some squirrel and duck hunts.

They can take apart, clean and put together the guns we use now...I dont see them having a hard time. The 11 year old is cleaning guns tonight with me.

The A400 is lighter and easier to clean if that matters to you. The A300 has the gas system similar to the old 391. The A400 has everything forward of the bolt with nothing in the buttstock

Nothing but that is mine for keeping here.

We always “graduated” to a 12 about his age so I was just doing the same

Used Remington 870 pump. You can’t kill it and a pump will slow him down and make him a better shot. Teach him how to clean it and protect it and his grandkids will use it.

Something about a single shot or a pump seems like it lends itself to a gift for a kid they’ll remember & use forever
