What's wrong with the m2 Benelli?

Nothing. I got a 20 gauge m2 just to add another 20 to my collection and that thing is light, like super light. I imagine the 12 is a little heavier but for a 28" barrel 20 gauge it is super thin and light and shoots 3" and 2 3/4 and cycles perfect. That being said I think a franchi is next on my list if I can find a decent one with a 28" barrel.

I agree a pump action for a kid is a greater starter shotgun, as most of us here probably started with one. I would get an old one from a pawn shop. Just date it back to pre 2007ish (the older the better with 870s) imo.

ETA: Or the Benellie Nova and Super Nova pumps are probably the best newer pump shotguns in my opinion and they are budget friendly and can probably get a decent camp pattern if that is your thing.

I didn’t start with a pump and neither did my son.
When my son got his Franchi Affinity compact he was limited to one shell only. Until he proved he would be safe. He graduated to 2 shells and then 3.

Now he’s one of the top shooters on his trap team and can out shoot me easily.

This is a fun thread.

I'm sure whatever you get him will be a quality shotgun that he'll use often.

On the other hand, I'm 47 and more often than not, every time i have need of a shotgun, I find myself reaching past pumps and semiautomatics for that old break action 20 gauge I got when I was 12. I guess I'm weird for that but it makes me feel like a kid going on a hunt again.

Last year I went to Montana duck hunting and had problems with my 870 12 gauge. Switched to my buddy's son's 870 20 gauge and had no issues killing ducks. Would love to swap that 12 out for a 20.

Well obviously not everyone did. That is a good way to train a kid though with a semi.

Yeah my old youth 870 20 I had I hunted with until like 24 and killed a lot of ducks. Stupidly sold it and everyday I wish I still had it, I keep an eye out for one but I never seem to come across them used from that time period, which makes sense.

Long story short, a kid's first gun is going to be special and they are going to love it and keep it forever and think of those days when they were young hunting or shooting with their dad. Training and respect for the gun is the most important aspect apart from the gun, imo.

20 Gauge. Let him get good with that for 2 years and then get him a 12.

This isn’t a starter gun. This is a lifetime gun. He has been w me shooting for a while now. We have 20s a plenty.

I am looking for recs for a great semi auto in 12. I just don’t really want to spend more than 1200 or so

He is damn near a grown man and physically has no limitations.

He's shooting his 20 better than I am shooting my 12.

In that case, take him to a gun shop and let him shoulder some. I personally vote a Franchi or m2 in 12. But you can't go wrong with the 3 B's. I honestly have been wanting to add a Franchi to my collection even though the last thing I need right now is to buy another semi shotgun.

When I bought my Franchi, I also shouldered an SX4. Best feeling gun for me ever. I was dead set on not getting gas, so I went with the Franchi. No ragrets.

3 best feeling guns I’ve ever shouldered/ shot were the Franchi Affinity, Sx3 ( now 4 I guess) and the Retay I shoot now.

When my son bought his Retay I kind of fell in love with it and ended up getting one for myself. Both of us really like them, but I’m not sure it has the cachet of some better knowing more establish brands if you were getting it for a lifetime gun.
Those Winchesters sure are nice if you want to consider gas. Especially for the $

I love gas. But I was raised by a man dedicated to clean, clean guns. I just like the snappy feel of them, that is why I like the Retay much better than my SBE2. For a non gas gun it is crisp. The SBE is just so damn mushy feeling.

I love the Winchester Sx4 that I played with the other day, just not sure my son would keep it clean as it needs to be. His Dad is getting lazy with the cleaning duties!

I am the same way. I love gas but I have gone away from them.

I replaced a Benelli Super Vinci with that Retay. Sounds crazy, but I like the Retay infinitely better.

Not to me. I hated my Benelli from the first day. I am sure it is me, maybe I dont shoulder it well..but the Retay is so much better feeling to me. And I have said it before, that M2 20 he shoots is my favorite gun I have ever shouldered.

I dont know how important shooting 3.5 is going to be for him, for me it is not something I have ever shot.

By the way, after you fixed his nose you told us that when he got into puberty it would just grow any which way....it seems you were right!

It seems like half of the people I know use an SX4. I want one of those too I have an issue with just wanting shotguns for no reason other than having options to just grab one when I go hunt, or skeet shoot. I shot a friend's last season and it did feel really nice.

That being said the Franchi shoots and feels how my SBE3 SHOULD shoot and feel.

ETA: I'll get downvotes and hate on this, BUT when I was younger and in college, there were a few times where I forgot to get shells until the last minute and when I got back home for the school break all they'd have left is 3.5". So I've hunted with them a good bit. I personally like the option, mainly due to when you're buying shells last minute or run low toward the end of the season and you can't find any 3".

Practical? No, but I see no difference in them than 3" tbh. I try to buy cases in the summer now but I also try to grab a box of steel every time im at a gun shop/academy just cause and every now and then they only have 3.5" in stock.

I pretty much only shoot 3.5" bb.
I don't do cripples.

My daddy started my on a 20 gauge single shot that had a 30” barrel and weighed about 20 lbs (it seemed at the time). It was so big and heavy I could barely hold it up. Had tape around the forearm to hold it together. I don’t think recoil pads were invented yet. I’m 64, I was about 10 at the time. I still remember the recoil from that shotgun ??. But I’ve been shooting shotguns ever since. Seriously, I’d recommend an older Remington 870 20 gauge pump. Easy to manage, reliable and hand me down quality.

12 gauge Wingmaster. Great gun, low price and great starting point for a young hunter.

I don't hunt anymore but if I did, I would hunt ducks and geese with an 870.
