Budget?

Not sure you can really say there is one "best gun"

what ammo are you shooting?

TSS will allow you to go down in gauge.
Still anything with in the 3 B.
Beretta, Benelli, Browning.

Some prefer pumps. I'm not in that camp.

You’re going to get a ton of different opinions. The bottom line is you don’t need a special turkey shotgun. You just need to select an appropriate choke and shell combination and be sure to pattern the gun!

IMO though, the best is something short, reasonably light weight, and doesn’t kick like a mule. The TSS shells have opened up a ton of opportunity’s for smaller gauge guns as well, but as of right now, my Mossberg 940 Pro Turkey with 18.5” barrel is what I would call the best shotgun for turkey hunting. I hope they make one in 20 gauge.

I used to just use my SBEII turkey hunting until I had it click on me 3 different times on toms. I got an 870 pump with a pistol grip in 12 ga a few years ago. If I had to do it over again I might get a 20 ga with the TSS ammo now. I bought a single shot 410 for my kids when they get older, and I started using that after I killed two last year, but never shot at one. That 410 will reach out there too with TSS

I got a tristar viper in .20 with a pistol style red dot. I shoot an Indian river choke with federal tss. I don’t shoot them across the field so I’m not sure the effectiveness at something ridiculous like 60 yards, but they don’t flop at 40.

Best of all it’s very light, I can carry it all day (and have multiple times) without fatigue. I would absolutely recommend it.

Depends if you want to kill turkeys or post on Instagram

I shoot a Remington 870 20ga with Apex TSS

Nothing wrong with diving deeper but you don't need more

Tri star viper Max is a hell of shotgun for $600 and it shoots 3.5" shells.

The remington 20 gauge is what I am leaning towards but with the jelly head choke

It’s a shame you can’t find the turkey barrels for them anymore. Hopefully Rem Arms starts making them again.

This in a synthetic compact is gonna be a good choice, just need to make sure it’s either really old or really new.

Mossberg is gonna make a similar gun, I shoot a 500 superbantam which is a youth model and it’s been a great upgrade to the long heavy semiauto I used to lug around. My gun liked an Indian creek choke with apex and verdict TSS and you’ll hear a lot of folks swear by a certain choke, but what matters is if YOUR gun will pattern it, with the loads you plan to shoot. Something I’ve found effective is conning other people into thinking they need a new setup, and everyone buying a couple chokes to try, until you find the best one for your combo and hunting style. A baseball pattern at 20 yards is cool to show people, but you’ll airmail it if that’s the distance you usually shoot at a bird.

With tss and a choke that’s been patterned, any 20ga is gonna have you lethal past 60 yards, it’s really about what is comfortable to walk around with all day, and for a lot of folks these days that’s the lightest synthetic gun that doesn’t break the bank. 3” TSS is no joy to shoot in a light pump, but it’s not that much better in a light semi auto either.

That's like "best boat for freshwater fishing" or "best truck for driving on roads."

As several have mentioned, guage down. I’ve gone from turkeying with a 12 to a 20 to a 28. Plenty of range and power with TSS. More enjoyable carrying the 28 all day. SBE 3. Next stop, 410.

12ga full choke that is reliable.

Don’t overthink it.

Whatever you do, don't get a 12 ga. 20ga is more than enough but honestly I'm hunting with my .410 more than anything. Tss has changed the game. I only killed one bird this year, but it was at 37 steps with a .410

By all means, OP should listen to the guy that killed one turkey

OP, as others have said, TSS makes almost any shotgun completely serviceable for killing turkeys. I probably hunt more days in the spring than 95% of posters. My $0.02 is get a reliable shotgun and pair it with TSS and a choke that isn’t overly constricted. Most turkeys are killed at less than 30 yds and it’s easy to miss one with a really tight choke. .585 for 20 ga and .665 for 12 ga is what I recommend. Nothing tighter in most guns. You can shoot a .410 like some have said, but you are limiting yourself. If the weight of a 20 is too much for you but a .410 is fine, well….

I don't turkey hunt, but my parent's (deer hunter's) borrow my 1187 every year for turkey hunting.

They use a patternmaster anaconda LINK and have done well with it.

They are not using a scope or anything like that. It is the plain 1187, nothing special. I think it was 400-500 new.

I am sure you can take any shotgun and put a decent choke on it and hunt turkey.

Damn bro I was just making a comment. No need to act like I don't know how to turkey hunt because I "only killed one bird". I don't personally like lugging around a 12ga anymore and prefer my .410 or 20 gauge.
