Funniest, most redneck, thing I have ever seen out there was a group of high school kids.

They didnt crawfish. They drank beer, floated two full size pool rafts in a pond, proceeded to play floating beer pong and got white boy wasted.

Buddy, access from the Ramah exit on I-10, drive to the levee next to the old store at the exit and head north on the road alone the side of the levee. Drive down a mile or so there will be a sign on the left to cross over the levee for South Farm...

I 10 West from BTR to Laffy:

10 West, take Ramah/Maringouin exit. Turn right at bottom of exit ramp then hit a quick left at the run down bait shop. Asphalt becomes gravel.

Take gravel road (parallel to levee) past three or four cattle guards.

Look for a sign that reads 'South Farm', on your left, near the base of the levee.

Drive over top of levee.

You're there. Permit shack easy to see.

Happy Harvesting

Would highly recommend an ATV. Makes it a lot easier and cuts down on time. It would have sucked carrying an ice chest, 35lbs of crawfish, nets and all other accessories a mile back to the truck after we were finished.

If anyone has traps and needs an ATV, lemme know. All my rigs are in Ville Platte but my bike is here in BR.

Damn, this reads like you had the want to discreetly create your own invitation to the infamous OB bicentennial hangout/ crawfishing/ judge festival.

While an ATV is a tremendous luxury to have out there, we have done it successfully with a radio flyer wagon. 2 sacks of crawfish and everything we needed to catch them fit just fine.

That varies wildly from day to day and is also dependent on how many traps you have. With 20 traps on a good day, a sack can be caught in a couple hours.

CRAWFISH SEASON OPENS ON SHERBURNE W.M.A.

quote:

The South Farm area of the Sherburne Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is open to recreational crawfishing from April 1 to July 31. The South Farm area is located on the eastern side of the Sherburne WMA, which is approximately 20 miles from Baton Rouge.

From Baton Rouge take Interstate 10 West, then take the Ramah exit and travel on the levee road north about 2 miles. After passing two cattle guards, take the levee ramp across the levee to where a parking area is located. From Hwy. 190 travel approximately 13 miles south on the East Guide Levee Road to the South Farm entrance.

"The South Farm area is a great place to spend a day outdoors with your family catching crawfish," said LDWF Wildlife Biologist Tony Vidrine. "A family could catch enough crawfish from the South Farm area for a good quality crawfish boil."

Anyone between the ages of 16 and 59 using the WMA must possess one of the following: a Wild Louisiana Stamp, a valid Louisiana fishing license, or a valid Louisiana hunting license. Persons 15 and younger or older than 60 years of age are exempt from this requirement.

Recreational crawfishing is limited to set nets or recreational wire traps with a 100-pound limit per vehicle or boat per day. Crawfishing is allowed from daylight to dark seven days a week.

For anyone utilizing recreational wire traps, a valid basic fishing and recreational gear license must be in their possession and each trap must be tagged with name and recreational license number.

Only 35 recreational traps are allowed per license, and no traps or nets may be left overnight. Also, no motorized watercraft are allowed on the South Farm complex. Walk-in or ATV access is provided to the crawfish ponds from the parking area. ATV's may be used on limestone roads only and not beyond NO ATV warning signs.

Use beef melts, or pogies. I prefer pogies as they are much more durable.

I woud really like to get out there and try this when I get a break from school. Does the time of day affect crawfishing or just the temperature?

What kind of traps and where would you recommend getting them from?

Catching your own crawfish sounds much better than paying for them.
