Most people who wade would shite themselves if they actually knew how many sharks are around them.

Had a 6 foot black tip tear up my floating basket 20 years ago out of Port Sulphur fishing the beach. I had 21 trout in there and was left with one and a half.

My wife bought me a Walden kayak for that exact reason. I wasn’t ever worried about them attacking me, although I had to push some off with my rod a few times but them missing and biting me in the leg by accident and you can bleed to death from that at the islands particularly Chandy. I remember having to keep an eye on this huge 8 foot bull while catching trout on the inside once years ago. I think he was sleeping or something.

Sharks are at an all time high now

Have them. Havent had any issues since using them. Stomping on the sand will clear them away too. No real stopping them from them eating your fish if they want them.

My pop had a thresher shark ( big arse extra long tail) steal trout off his stringer while wade fishing in Grand Isle like 50 years ago.

I used to sell product to a very successful business owner in Jackson,MS that was an avid wade fisherman. He was out wade fishing the surf of Chandelier Island with a trout stringer, and was attacked by a 9 foot bull shark. He almost lost his leg below the knee due to infection. It left him with a permanent limp after extensive rehab.

Dude was tough as nails. Really a good guy. When he was in the hospital recovering I brought him a Porterhouse from his favorite restaurant. I didn't enjoy that job much, but I did enjoy getting to know this good ole MS boy.

Wade fishing is out. No thanks.

Back in the day we surf fished alot and used a small inflatable boat (something a 7 y/o could sit in and float) tied to us and placed an ice chest in it. Putting the fish in the ice chest wasn't as easy as dropping it in the basket but our fish loss number to sharks was 0.

Just make sure that stingray isn’t under your foot when you do.

That would be my luck.

I surf fish from the beach now, rarely do I wade out anymore, and even then I am never very deep, don't stay out there, and don't have bait or fish with me.

back in 85 at GI surf fishing right at dark had a a bunch of little sharks swarm me and a buddy's stringers and we each probly had 50-60 trout on stringer ended up with 15 or so fully intact.

several times over the years I've had trout get cut in half wade and boat fishing.

After being stung by 2 stingrays and seeing just how many sharks are around after a bay fishing trip at St Joe bay, wade fishing is a hard no for me.

I don't even like walking out to cast my surf set rigs.

A 6 foot or so shark came within about 3 feet of me and my dad after he had just thrown back a speck when we were wade fishing in St. Joe bay last summer. I instinctively jumped behind my dad to sacrifice him first

I was wade fishing it one year with my dad, I was dragging my kayak for bait and fish and stuff. My dad won't get in a kayak so I was wade fishing with him to hang out.

A school of mullet busted up through the water all over the place. About a 6 foot shark came out of the water with a mullet in its mouth right between us. We were about 30 feet apart.

I got my arse in the kayak and left him

I've got several encounters from that area. We were hanging in the surf on the beach side of the cape. All in a circle drinking, kneeling on the sandbar. I turned around in crystal clear water, what looked to be about a 6 foot or bigger shark was swimming right towards me. I moved, it freaked and took off. I left everyone in the water and got out.

That's why you need a long stringer or a floating ring fish basket/net. The taxman is always there.

Chandelier Island
As much as I loved my one trip there, the sharks and rays really brought me down. I don't know if I will do it again because just fishing from the little boats is not enough, and the critter factor really scared me.

Only time I legit came out of the water for the whole weekend, was at Chandelier. This 8-9' shark jumped out the water to eat my trout and scared the living shite out of me. Probably 15-20' away from me.
