Aluminium tank issue.
I work alot with the owner of RAM welding "Tony" here in my industrial area for my business. RAM Welding also specializes in the fabrication aluminum marine fuel tanks. I am at Tony's shop pretty often and it amazes me to see the condition of some of the old aluminum fuel tanks I see there which come out of all different types of boats. Moisture is the enemy of aluminum fuel tanks. Tanks will corrode in different places, depending on where they are subjected to constant contact with moisture. For example, on my 20 Shamrock the fuel tanks usually corrode on the bottom as they are foamed into the hull compartment at the bottom. Water penetrates into the fuel tank compartment from the deck above and the water travels and is trapped at the bottom of the tank by the foam used. The fuel tank pictured below came out of a Mako, and all of the corrosion is on the top of the tank, as the deck above leaked and water collected on the top. This tank actually has 6 holes completely opened up. As you can see the gray primer that this tank came with when new did absolutely nothing to stop the corrosion. When installing a new fuel tank, it should be painted with the proper type primer/epoxy paint OR powder coated as per Tony's recommendation. I have seen coal tar type paint used by boat builders - I cant speak as to the merits of that as I am not familiar. Take a look at these pics and imagine what could have happened to this boater . I bought an '05 super crew dually in '08 for $13K, spent about $4K on it including replacing the head gaskets, head studs, oil cooler, deleting the EGR, replacing the FICM, and adding a programmer. I've put 120K miles on it since then without issue, and quite frankly, it's the best running diesel I've had (post bulletproofing).
IOW if you have some money to put into it up front to bulletproof it, I would jump on a deal.

The early Opti's were better known as Opti Pops, just like the Yammies with the same technology in their early days...HPDI? But I can tell you for a fact the '06-present Optis are awesome motors.

Yea 4k seems like a huge pile of money at first glance but in the long run. It doesn't seem bad.
My biggest problem would be finding somebody I trusted to do that kind of serious work. That's a whole bunch of nickels.

i had an 05. i loved it. the only real problem i had was the oil cooler, but it was replaced under warrenty

I've always wanted to get a tool truck. Engine-driven welding machine/generator, compressor, lift, hose-making equipment, bench vise, a bunch of cones, a lift and mud tires so I can get where I need to go, and every tool imaginable

The Opti's are still fighting the issue into the 2011 models... it seems to be those of us running in shallow water trying to get to reds. I know multiple people who popped theirs after churning in shallow water the day before... all have been consistently told it has something to do with a filter on the compressor getting clogged

The only decent Ford diesel is the the one they are selling right now; the 6.7.
Not a fan of the 6.0 or the 7.3.
On the 6.7, they spent a ton on R&D and I think they got it right.
I love the Duramax-Allison combo, but the rest of the truck is dated and the crappy interior bits irritate me.

I knew this one crew that had a bad arse one, but they had a set of folding steps to get into it. It was basically like a tree trimming crew truck jacked up and 10wd with a huge hydraulic winch up front

Curious but why no love for the 7.3? Sure they're underpowered by today's standards but their reliability is legendary...then again maybe the fact that they are underpowered is what makes them so reliable.

Because all of the 7.3's on this earth right now are 10 years old or older and it's damn near impossible to find a low miles one in good shape.
6.0's on the other hand can be found all day around 100k miles and in very good shape selling for well below blue book.
Fantastic engines, but the glory days of the 7.3's and 5.9's are long long gone and likely to never return. Just like the days of 3 pedals and a stick shift (

I've seem some good ones, but I've also seen some with crazy issues no one could fix.
Duramax is/was way better, IMHO.

I found an 03 6 leaker 4x4 in texas with 61,000 miles and a 6 speed. Damn thing looks brand new.

5.9 Cummins with 6 speed standard are pulling top dollar in my area... Its like the 7.3 for the ford followers..
