This is a case where you tell the ATF man you sold the gun to someone else or lost it in a boating accident
Then a couple years down the road you get caught with it and go spend a few years in the pen.

Might be some of the worst advice I've ever read on Tigerdroppings. That's a pretty dang low bar to get under

Wrong. Hide the gun away. say nothing! Do not even respond to questions. Do not lie. Do not divulge anything.

I would have never spent money on a gun that horrific looking. It looks like my kindergartner drew it up one day after nap time. I would think that there could/should be some responsibility on the manufacturer for selling an illegal firearm as legal. The letter makes it sound like they intentionally marked it wrong.

And do time for violating the federal law against Making false statements (18 U.S.C. § 1001). That’s what got Jim Brown, Martha Stewart, Michael Flynn, and plenty of regular old folks who lied to federal agents.
Often it’s not the crime itself that lands you in prison. It’s the coverup.

Probably a dumb question as I haven't bought a gun in over a decade, but how do they know you have one? The background checks just to see if you can buy any gun, but it doesn't list the specific weapon or if you actually bought it, correct? If you pay cash, what lists your name and address with the specific type of gun you bought?

the ATF can go to the manufacturer. the manufacturer tells the ATF where the firearm was sent (the FFL holder). the ATF goes to said FFL holder and asks for paperwork/background checks of the people who bought said firearm. they go to the address on the form.

Form 4473 is the form filled out and is required that every dealer maintain them.

Basically it's a gun registry?

Top of page 3 (4473 Form)
eta: it's a half-assed registry. the FFL holder isn't required to send in the background check information to the ATF after the sale. they're just required to hold it until 20-25 years or so. someone can confirm the years. if the FFL holder goes out of business, they are then required to send in all of their filled out 4473s to the ATF.
