I was mountain biking at Chewachala state park in Auburn yesterday evening. I'm in the SE part of the park on an aptly named trail called "Deer Rub" which is actually more of a hiker trail than a bike trail. I've never been down it so I thought I would see what was down the trail. At a stream crossing I saw a giant monster of a deer. Big enough to look me in the eye if we were face to face. We looked at each other for a second then he bolted. His antlers were shed but because of the size I assumed it was a male. I would have thought he was a mule deer if we have those in Alabama. The most interesting part was his color. It was a really dark silvery charcoal, almost black. Imagine grey winter coat but a couple of shades darker. Do we have something other than white tail deer here in Alabama that would have a really dark coat? I'm no deer expert but I know some of you baws are and might be able to tell me what I came across.

I'm north of there in Clay County. I see some really dark ones from time to time.

So a horse or a mule?

You new to the OB? You were supposed to claim it was a giant black panther.

Could have been. Never heard of that term until today. I just assumed with it's large size it was something other than a common white tail. But it was sized and shaped like a 5+ year old.

Don't get all judgy because ole baw dyed his coat to cover up the gray hairs. He just wants to feel younger a bit longer.
