Said goodbye to my dog of 13 years this morning

Mix of Dalmatian and Bull Terrier. Great dog, even provided emotional support during my divorce. Always loyal, always happy to see me come home from work no matter how bad the day went. She started going down several months ago and things really started getting bad this last week. As it stood, I was going to have to take her to the Vet to have her put down in the morning. Instead, she died peacefully at home on her terms during the night. Going to miss that dog. I tried to give her a very good life and she went for want of nothing. Never remarried, kids are out on their own, so it was just Rylie and me. Going to be hell for awhile being totally alone in the house for the first time in over 35 years. Will take time to mourn her loss and later on look at getting another pup. Given my age, it will probably be my last dog, and I would love to enjoy raising one from a pup one last time.

Sorry to hear that! Sounds like she had a good life to me and was spoiled
RIP Rylie

Went thru it with my dog of 10 years this past summer. Had to put him down after a cancer diagnosis. It’s tough buddy I feel your pain. Sounds like you had a great partner. NOTHING is more loyal to a man than his dog. I just got another dog about 2 weeks ago. Couldn’t be happier. It’s very refreshing to raise a pup.

Damn man. Really sorry for your loss. Rylie was indeed a lucky dog and you were lucky owner. All of use that have gone through this know and feel your pain. Search for the poem "Rainbow Bridge".

Dogs are possibly the best animals on the entire planet. But man is it tough to see them go. RIP Rylie.

Nothing like man's best friend. My lab will be 12 next month, so I am preparing myself. Glad she went in peace.

What a great comment about your dog. They really are family.
RIP Rylie. Sounds like she was a great companion though some difficult and happy times in your life.
Dogs are awesome. Sorry for your loss.

I am really sad for you. Thanks for being such a good doggy dad. I am glad you are thinking of giving another pup a great home.

Been there multiple times and I know the feeling, but if you like dogs and their companionship, get another animal. If you’re worried about the next dog outliving you...just put that away and go rescue a dog. That’s enough for both of you...
ETA: our family always had pups but we started adopting refugees about 10 years ago. They require no more work to retrain/train than a pup, but that look in their eyes when they realize that they have stability is priceless. The love they’ll give is the same. Sorry about your lose.

Condolences man. I lost a 16YO dog three weeks ago and the 15YO is on the way out. Sucks.

Kipling:
THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.
When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find - it's your own affair, -
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.
When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!),
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone - wherever it goes - for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear!
We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent,
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve;
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long -
So why in - Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Thanks for all of your replies. It means a lot. She got a nice sunset burial yesterday evening. She was buried in her favorite purple LSU blanket. My son even hand chiseled her a headmarker.
I have had the fortune of having several dogs over my life time. This one was tops.
I recall when my wife left us ten years ago, I had the dof and two adolescents to finish raising on my own. That dog walked up and down the hallway for the better part of six months looking for her "mother."
Her mother showed up in the driveway a couple of years later. Rylie was so excited to see her, and I figured if it would make her happy, why not. I let Rylie out and she ran up to within roughly ten feet of her "mother", stopped, then growled and snarled at her, put her nose up in the air, and went back into the house. The look on my ex-wife's face was priceless. My only regret was not having a camera for it. Rylie got her own steak that night whIle I was cooking. There were so many other good times, that I will forever treasure. She's no longer suffering anymore and that means a lot in spite of the pain of giving her up.
Again, thank all of you for your kind thoughts.

Sorry to hear that. Lost my lab of 14 years last year. It's tough. Get another pup as soon as you think you can. They'll definitely help with getting over the loss.

So glad she was able to cross the Rainbow Bridge on her own. That's the hardest thing I ever had to do...put a dog down.
We bring Boots to a internal medicine specialist this Friday to see if she has a rare disease or an auto-immune disease. Either way it sucks...funny how the dog you never wanted becomes the dog you find yourself loving and wanting to hold on to forever.
My condolences on your loss of your family member. Definitely get another pup. Not to replace the one you lost...but to keep the happiness of having a dog in your life. They truly do bring humans happiness.
