the suppressed 308s are movie quiet and I have seen coons shoot with them out of one side a box stand and deer feeding 100yds away on the other side never even flinch at the shot.

There’s your problem, coons can’t shoot for shite

From experience I can tell you a full power 308 even suppressed is going to be too much for training a 6yo to shoot they will not enjoy shooting it enough to actual learn to shoot.

That is not say that a 6yo couldn’t learn to shot on something else and shoot a suppressed 308 a few times to get comfortable and shoot deer with it but they won’t be able to shoot it enough to train and enjoy shooting.

As far as 300blk plenty of people have shot deer with them and reds on reds on reds has some first hand experience with some of the fancy bullets designed for subsonic expansion. But you’ll never get a bang flop and you’ll have to do tracking no matter what if using subsonic.

Supersonic 300blk is more capable of putting down deer than 77gr 5.56 so if I was limited to those two to pick what I’m shooting at deer with I’d go 300blk and shoot supers at it.

Subsonic 308 is pointless as you’re better off with 300blk because of the twist rates as mentioned.

Best solution more guns. Get him a 10/22 out a little cheapo scope on it and let him go to town shooting as many bricks of .06 cent per round 22lr. To me getting a kid comfortable with scopes and aiming and just shooting pays off more than darn near anything.

You mentioned the polonium K. Any thoughts about looking at other rifles but chambered in 243? The polonium K sounds great on a bolt action 243. And I take my 20” barrel 308 with 6” long can into every climber I’ve ever crawled into.

I know it’s another caliber but it would check all of your boxes better than a 556 or 300blk except for subsonic suppression but in my real world experience a heard of pigs are moving out pretty swiftly when one of their buddies are dropped with subsonic 300blk. Granted that’s out of a semiauto so not quite as quiet as bolt gun but still.

My recommendation if you want to stick with the Ruger.

Id stick with the 5.56 since you've already got the ammo and the can for it. I don't think .300 blackout is going to be noticeably more effective than 5.56 at killing stuff anyway.

I suggested a .243 Roberts to my brother for his wife and kids. Worked very well for them. I think he may also be using it at the times when he does not want to use the .3006 or .270.

Yessir it says right on ottercreeks website that the polonium has a 6mm bore and will work with any 243 cartridge.

Here’s a video that shows how well the k can suppresses a 243 bolt gun.

My kids have shot a pile of nice bucks with the ruger ranch in .300 blk. It’s a great round.

My son got one in 6.5 Grendel and it’s been great too.

I’m honestly curious why do you think this would be ? Blackout seems to have solid results. .308 suppressed seems like a better caliber

It’s simply the energy. A full power 223 Rem is well over 1,000 ft lbs. A subsonic 308 is about 400 ft lbs (like shooting the deer with a 45acp from a pistol).

I went ahead and bought the 5.56 ranch

Have a tacticon 1x6 lpvo and my polonium k to go on it.

Hopefully I can go sub MOA and get great shot placement on a whitetail this year

Good choice. Should be lots of fun if nothing else.

Well. I have 1000 rounds of 5.56 M193 and green tips.

The hunting rounds are pretty pricy for 5.56 at $2.00/rd

My brother used .223 75gr gold dots hunting deer. I always thought it would be not enough but it penetrated well and expanded violently within 200yds.

I would stick with .223/556 unless you are going to suppress.
