Looking into first rifle purchase. Buddy of mine suggested 270. Any particular brands to stay away from?

Budget?
Primary use?
Open fields/ pipelines or thickets and woods?
270 is never a bad choice of caliber for deer.

Here we go.

Can’t tell you what to stay away from, but can tell you just buy a Tikka or Bergara and be done with it.

The only turd I know of is the remington 783. Otherwise, pretty much everything else is plenty good enough to kill stuff.

.270 is a fine deer caliber. For shooting deer, theres really not much appreciable difference between .25-06 and 300 winmag. Get whatever tickles your fancy, buy some good ammo, shoot a bunch.

783 is from what I could tell a shittier offering of the 700. I haven't shot either one but basing that off other forums/reviews

$1000 will get you an extremely nice setup. If you hunt in louisiana, nothing makes more sense than a crack barrel 35 whelen. It is primitive season legal and gets you two extra weeks of hunting, and it's a capable 400 yard moose caliber. You can hunt anything in the lower 48 with it.

If I were you on that budget I would get:
CVA scout .35 whelen ($400)
Leupold VX-3i scope, 2.5-8x36 ($400)

Spend the extra on ammo

I asked a similar question awhile back. Got a lot of great answers from the board for ideas too and was real helpful in getting an idea of what to get myself.

Good advise here but should you want a bolt action rifle I would go with 30-06.

One thing rarely mentioned is ammunition availability. 30-06, 308, and 243 can be found most anywhere. If you’re using something such as a 325 WSM you may not be able to find those if by chance you’re on a hunting trip and realize you have forgotten to pack ammo. That’s just something to consider. As far as rifles go , anything that feels good to you is good enough. If you’re looking for tight group accuracy stay away from semiautomatics unless it a M1A. I’ve never owned a semiautomatic in 50 years of shooting that would shoot anything under a 2 inch group at 100 yards, only the M1A is capable of minute of angle accuracy at that distance. A well tuned AR 10 comes close.

I strongly disagree with this. I’ve found it’s harder to get MOA accuracy out of even a premium M1A whereas I’ve shot a few AR10s that shoot under an inch. Two examples are here, my friend’s PSA PA10 and my own Aero Precision M5.

My AR-10 in 6.5 CM shoots a 5 shot group under .5”.

Still breaking in my AR-10 in .308. I’ll get it dialed in to at least 1” 5 shot groupings.
Most guns are capable of sub MOA groupings the person behind the trigger usually isn’t or they don’t test their ammo enough to get better groupings.

To the OP, don’t rule out Savage, Ruger American, Ruger American predator or any number of other guns. I personally prefer short action guns: .308, 7mm-08, 6.5cm, etc but a .270 and .30-06 are 2 great calibers as well.

Also disagreeing. I’ve got a POF Revolution DI in .308 that is a Sub-MOA rifle.

Bergara

I have Bergara Woodsman 7 mag. I almost bought the Tikka but I like the way the Bergara wooden stock looks. I prefer wooden stocks on all my hunting rifles.

Tikka, Bergara, Ruger or WBY have great bolt actions. One of my favorite guns I own is a Remington 700 BDL in 270. The Remingtons are great as long as it was manufactured before 1988. Hell, Savage is making really good guns

I have been shooting a Remington 700 7mm 08 for 25 years for deer/hog hunting. Love this caliber. Have since bought 2 Thompson Center 7mm 08 rifles for sons.

They are dead on accurate, sweet shooting and plenty killing power. The Thompson’s were around $600-700 including the scope
