Now the choice of actual gun to order. After discussion with the Mrs. we decided to up the budget for the gun. After looking on web last night at Classic Firearms, there were two guns that stuck out but wanted opinions.

1st. Savage 11/111 Trophy Hunter with Nikon Scope $550

2nd. Browning AB3 Stalker w/ Nikon Buckmaster or Redfield Revenge. Saw Redfield is made by Leupold. $570-$590

Staying with 7mm-08. I think he likes idea of Browning because his uncle has one and cousins.

His grandpa who belongs to club can buy his gun strap.

Thanks again. Getting closer to pulling trigger. Last, will order online so ideas of company. I know one has been posted but they were out of stock on Savage and didn't carry the Browning in caliber. Someone I know mentioned Classic Firearms to me. Who should I use for FFL transfer in Baton Rouge area.

This gun is asscheeks. Get a Tikka from Eurooptic sale. If they don't have one in 7mm-08, try and buy a Tikka elsewhere. Also, for FFL use Sulzer.
BUY THIS

I bought my kids the Ruger American All-Weather Compact in 7mm-08 3 years ago. I love hunting with the gun because it is a little shorter and lighter than a full size gun.

When I did my research the Ruger also had the shortest trigger pull length of the other 3-4 "budget" guns that I considered. This may not be an issue for you with an 11 and 13 year old but my kids were younger.

FWIW: My kids shoot the Hornady Custon Lite SST 120gr Reduced Recoil rounds. I shoot Remington Corelokt 140gr.

ETA: I think I paid around $425 for that rifle... If I could have spent only $100 more and gotten the Tikka that ChatRabbit posted above I probably would have done that.

Ruger 6mm Remington. Deadly on hogs, deer size game, less than 300 yards.

This one is $369 no tax and free shipping. Only costs around 25 dollars to have your local dealer transfer it to you. Really easy simple process. Has a accutrigger and scope with mounts. It’s a really nice gun. Especially for starting out.

I bought one for my son last year.

That's not even an apples an oranges comparison. That's like apples and chickens.

It's quite literally a deer to deer comparison. If you can't understand that simple comparison, then you're not worth even trying to explain the physics involved in making a clean kill on an animal. Keep making young kids learning to hunt think a bigger caliber will compensate for poor marksmanship. Seems to work for you.

I already posted earlier that a 223 is a good choice. It is accurate with little recoil and cheap enough to practice with all day. For those that think it's under powered, then look at it this way. A 350 grain arrow from a compound bow going 300 fps has a lot less momentum than a 62 grain 223 round at 2900 fps. Now, since most people like to compare kinetic energy (a poor factor in deciding the lethality of a bullet) the 223 also averages about 12 - 15 times the energy of a broad head. By saying a 223 is underpowered for deer is saying a bow and arrow is not lethal enough either.

This is one of the most idiotic comparisons I've ever seen here. Seriously one of the dumbest.

A broadhead on an arrow cuts. The only energy it requires is enough for the braodhead to make it to the vitals and sever them causing them to bleed out.

Nothing like a bullet. Absolutely no viable comparison between the two.

Wrong... It's the momentum (NOT energy) that pushes the broadhead through. The sharp edges and point lessen the resistance. A 223 has more momentum; more than enough that it doesn't need sharp edges to lessen resistance. A good hunting bullet will actually expand and increase resistance because it can afford to with the extra momentum. You are the one who is idiotic.

Show me a .223/5.56 that "expands" and doesn't break up. (I will edit to say that the Barnes TSX will fit that bill but not much else out there will)

They are closely related. Get out of here with that dumb shite.

Mannnn dont come in here calling people idiots about physics and throwing around physics language.

You're comparing two things which are so dissimilar they cant be compared. All an arrow and a bullet have in common is that they are projectiles.

Between those 2 choices, I'd go w/ the Savage based entirely on my personal experience. When I bought my son his first deer rifle it was a package scope/Savage bolt in 308 Win. It's been a fine gun. In addition I have other Savage bolt action pistols and bolt action rimfires; none of them have disappointed me. I don't have any recent experience w/ the A-Bolt. I tried to buy one many yeas ago in 284 Win, but couldn't catch them in stock. As far as online gun dealers, I've bought most of my online guns from Kentucky Gun Company and Bud's Gun Shop and been very pleased. The only "bad" online experience I had was with Gunbuyer.com.

The gun to me is second to the optics, and you picked an excellent caliber. Should be plenty of good A bolts in pawn shops.

Don't skimp on the scope. I would only buy Leupold period. I know that there are sexier names and european 8 jillion dollar scopes that some experts mention around here, but a Leupold is a hunter's scope. Always has and always will be.

I shoot a A bolt with a Vari-X II that was bought in 1995 new. This year was the first year I put a dime on the turret.

Vari-X II is a great scope for the money.

My wife now hunts with my youth model 7 .243 that was given to me for my 11 th birthday. Killed a damn good 8 pt with it last year using my 85 grain ballistic tip handloads.

I picked up a used one 3X9 40mm on Facebook a couple of years ago for $125. I put it on my sons 7mm-08 last year and it’s a really nice setup. I sold the scope that came with the rifle for $50 do I really don’t have much in it and I will hunt with it in a heartbeat.

And if anything ever happens to that leupold, just send it back and they will fix or replace. No questions asked. Even if bought used. That’s hard to beat.

Thanks to everyone for suggestions. Turn of events happened this morning as I was able to purchase a Weatherly Vangaurd Select .270 this morning at Walmart on clearance for $249. I was able to get last one in Breaux Bridge while I was on way to Lake Charles.

Plan is to now spend a little more on scope since I got the deal on gun. Will use reduced coil ammo. If too much for son the gun will be mine then I will purchase 7mm-08.

Good buy. Should be easy for boys that age to handle. Just hack the stock if it's too long
