My son is all set up now with his new rifle. Here is his setup.

Weatherby Vangaurd Select .270
DNZ Hunter Masters Scope Rings/Mount
Nikon Prostaff 3-9x50

The scope rings/mount was a challenge as Talley makes them but couldn't find what I wanted local. A couple visits to a couple gunshops and no luck on scope mount. Finally ended up calling Spillway Sportsman and they had what I needed and got it boresighted as well. He will be surprised when he gets home from school today. Hope he enjoys it.

That’ll be just fine for the rest of his life. Good deal. Son has a Vanguard. Solid rifle, especially for the price.

Did you buy the medium or high rings for the 3-9x50? I basically have the same setup except I’m putting a Ziess on it I wasn’t using.

My dad bought me a 30-06 BAR when I was 8.

I now hunt with a 7mm-08 remmington model 7 youth gun. After refinishing the stock, it’s an awesome little gun. I’ll probably hand it down to my son in a couple of years. I bought my daughter (6) a Savage lightweight hunter in .243. It weighs 5.5 LBs. If she doesn’t like hunting, I may take it for myself.

I bought the high rings.

Also, I am going to end up buying me and my youngest son the 7mm-08. May get another Weatherby. We are at camp and will go out and shoot tomorrow.

Remington 700 chambered in .25-06. Very reasonably priced and a perfect gun for the young ones. My son has been shooting it since he was 10 and has killed 4 deer with it.

It oughta shoot just fine. Buy a box of federal blue box 150 and a box of 130 and hunt with whichever one it shoots the best.

.270 is probably the perfect whitetail caliber. Bullets are heavy enough to exit reliably but fast enough to do very violent things with reasonable recoil. It's one of the 3 best IMO

Well today he shot his gun. First he shot the 20 gauge shot gun. After that, he shot the 270. He handled it easy. Said it kicked less than the shotgun. He shot at 25 yards. 1st two shots were within an inch. His uncle shot to check and all 3 were with an 1" of each other. He was getting tired by time we moved back to 100 yards. He did fine. I shot last and put 1" from bullseye. Very smooth shooting gun. I regret not buying me one.

Great choice. I just bought a .270 Howa which is the exact same gun. FWIW Remington 700 2 piece bases will fit. Just not the 1 piece.

Man, that is awesome....hope your boy has a lifetime of enjoyment out of that gun. I still have my first guns and really enjoy checking them out and enjoying all of the good times I had while using them.

Some of my very favorite memories are of sitting around a fire at the deer camp when I was very young listening to LSU on the AM truck radio.
