This is very dissapointing to me. I am all for technological advances but I am beginning to feel like the countless days I was forced to spend at the range may now have been wasted. In all seriousness I don't feel this rifle will help most shooters just because the scope sets the zero for them out to 1,000 yards. If the shooter is not absolutely smooth from trigger squeeze to follow through the shot will miss by feet. I dread teh day a compensator is invented for the flinches.

I wouldn't worry about it much. Hand a guy a thousand yard rifle without the magical geegaws on it and watch what happens.

I don't see the big deal.

Many people use ballistic calculators and rangefinders these days. Back in the day people had to just had to be good.

A friend of mine did the Thompson Long Range course a year or more ago. He came back with a Weatherby 30-378 that he used at the school. Pretty basic Leupold fixed recticle scope and he beats the hell out of targets at 500 yards and consistenly makes contact at 1,000. According to him anyone can make 1,000 yard shots with the right gun and a bit of expert instruction. Based on that I dont know that you need to spend $28K to land long range shots...

This

As opposed to the ex-Ranger someone posted a vid of recently who took an offhand, 1,000 yd shot at a human sized silouette target with a 37 lb Barrett .50 cal and smoked it on the first shot.

Now THAT is shooting.

This thing also compensates for the wind and barrometric calculator. I believe the damn thing also takes into account the coriolis effect on shots past 1,000 meters. I have never taken a 1,000 meter shot but if I ever do I don't want a rifle doing everything for me. It just seems like cheating to me.

The communist news network spin at the end of the video was a bit much, but a cool piece of technology imo.

I think a lot of guys here haven't seen the new Barret M107 scope. It has a piece mounted on it that does the calculations for you according to wind, humidity, distance, temperature, etc.

This isn't all that new of technology. And no criminal is going to be able to purchase it. I doubt a seller would accept food stamps as payment.

The average hunter like myself using a rifle with perfect zero no wind and match grade ammo could prob hit 1/10 at 1000 yards. Hell im not confident shooting at an animal past 300 with my current equipment.

Some of you might disagree however I also think many people overestimate the shooting skills of the AVERAGE hunter.

From the article:
quote:

The TrackingPoint scope allows the shooter to "tag" a target by placing a red dot on it within the crosshairs. Even when the safety is off and the shooter's finger pulls the trigger, the rifle will only fire when the crosshairs are locked on the red dot, making it relatively easy for even an inexperienced shooter to hit a target at long range.

I can understand the software w/in the scope compensating for variables of wind, elevation, etc and how that improves accuracy; but the above quote would suggest that the gun wouldn't fire until it was physically stable on the target a specified amount of time, thereby removing and "wobble" experienced by all shooters. If so, that would be truly amazing. Having said all that, I'm still a skeptic. I would still have to see it to believe it.

I agree w/ you entirely, Purple. I'd also add many SHOOTERS overestimate their PERSONAL shooting skills. The person who thinks he's a pretty good shot needs to go on a good prairie dog or ground squirrel hunt someday; he'll be very surprised how often he "loses."

hell you can shoot a deer in your living room online so this should be nothing new. shooting will only get easier with all the technology that is forever coming out.

want to be a good shot? use a 3x9 scope and then shoot 1k yards
